My husband's great grandmother was Sarah Anne (McDonald) Shean. She was born in Ireland on January 1, 1854. She immigrated to the US in 1874 alone, lived in Rock Island, Illinois, married William Shean, then they moved to Omaha, Nebraska and had 3 children, Katherine, John and Rose (my husband's grandmother). Sarah's parents were Patrick McDonald and Katherine McGinn. Their names are written in Sarah's death certificate. I'm pretty sure they stayed in Ireland or maybe even died before Sarah's immigration. We don't know when and where exactly they were born.

Patrick's parents were Michael McDonald and Mary Reilly. Patrick had 8 siblings: Ellen, Bridget, Margaret, Michael (born abt 1841), Catherine (born March 1843), James, Mary (born 15 June 1849), and Owen (born abt 1849). I think Patrick was the oldest. Almost all of his siblings immigrated to the US, Michael in 1863, Catherine with her husband Patrick McCaffrey in 1863 to New York state, Mary in 1866.

I'm trying to find out where Sarah and her parents lived in Ireland. I only have some clues from obituaries and old postcards. The obituary of Michael McDonald (Patrick's brother) says he was born in Co. Cavan. Catherine's obituary also mentions Co. Cavan. The obituary of Mary (McDonald) Bauer indicates her birthplace as Co. Fermanagh.

In 1910 Sarah received a postcard from her niece who lived in Ireland. Her niece wrote: "From niece Mary Anne with love". The postcard came from Newbliss, Co. Monaghan. In 1914 Sarah's daughter Katherine received a postcard from the same person, I assume. It says: "From Cousin Mary A. F. with love. Good night." This card was mailed from Redhills, Co. Cavan. A little packet with shamrock seeds was attached to the card. The packet was never opened and still has seeds in it.

Sarah also had some McGinn cousins who immigrated to the US and lived in Missouri. I know that her mother Katherine McGinn had a brother, Owen McGinn who was married to Margaret Rowan. Owen and Margaret had 5 children: Rose b. 10 Mar 1857 in Ireland; Margaret; Elizabeth b. 19 May 1865 in Ireland; Patrick b. 27 Aug 1867 in Clones, Co. Monaghan; Owen R. b. 30 Mar 1874 in Laurel Hill, Co. Monaghan.

We also have two very old photos from the 1800s. They are from Clones, Co. Monaghan. Nothing is written on them and no date. One photo is of a young woman. The other one is the same woman but a bit older, and beside her is standing a girl (looks like in her teens), probably her daughter.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message- you have done a lot of work on your family history! I hope that someone who recognises the family makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime, have you tried looking in Griffith?s Valuation? This is a land record from 1848-64. It doesn?t give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. I did a quick search for Patrick McDonald. There was records in Cavan and Monaghan but none for Fermanagh. It is impossible to know whether these Patrick?s are relevant to you but they may give you a starting point for your search:

Have you also tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if you can find Mary Anne? If not here's the link:

  • Hello Elena,

My 2nd Great Grandfather was Peter McDonald who immigrated to Wayne county NC in 1858. He was born in Ireland in 1832. He immigrated alone too. He named his son James Patrick McDonald and also Mary is a common name long ago. My Y-DNA test show our line was from Fermanagh/Monaghan for around 1000 years, we have a rare SNP/STR L69.5. In my searches, there are not many McDonald's in this area. It does have MacDonnell/McDonnell. I am guessing there is no male McDonald for DNA testing? Anyway would love to hear more and see the pictures.   johntmcdonald@yahoo.com

    Cheers

The oldest picture I have is my Great Grandfather. William Henry McDonald... attached

  • More pictures that I mentioned above. An unknown woman, probably related to the McGinn family. Printed on the back: "J. Galway, photographer, 21 Fermanagh St., Clones". The other picture is the same woman, probably with her daughter.

  • Hi Elena I am a great great grandson of owen mcginn and margaret. My father was eugene moore his mother was margaet lenihan whos mother was Teresa mcginn whos mother and father were owen an margaret (nee roane) mcginn. I have tried to upload an old photo of owen and margaret mcginn with four of their ten children but cannot get it uploaded. It was taken in the 1880s. Your Catherine mcginn would have come from either redhills or scotshouse. Just look ar a map of ireland and look were the three counties of cavan.monaghan and fermanagh meet. Catherine would probably have grown up about 2 mile away from there either in kivy in redhills (parish of kiloughter)in cavan or laurelhill/cornapaste in scotshouse(parish of currin) in monaghan. There are some mcdonalds and mccaffreys about but not sure if they are related. Would like to hear from you. Ps newbliss is about five miles east of scotshouse and clones is also five miles away. I knew owen mcginn had two sisters and a brother. One sister died at 19 and is buried in cavan. The other sister must be your catherine whom i did not know what happened. Owen's brother patrick married and lived locally but i think he has no living descendants. Regards michael
