I will be visiting Ireland for the first time beginning 23 September. My wife's maiden name was Storey. She thinks that she has Irish ancestors, but isn't sure. She also knows that someone wrote a genealogical history called, "Storeys of Old" that traces her family. Does anyone have the book?

She also knows that her name derives from the Norse "Stori", and than she has Viking ancestors who settled in York in England. Unfortunately, that's all she knows. We would appreciate any information or help.

Thanks!

  • Neil,

The name Storey is not very common in Ireland. Griffiths Valuation (1848 ? 1864) has just 242 households listed. The 1901 census lists 502 people across the whole country. 337 were of assorted Protestant denominations (Church of Ireland, Methodist, Presbyterian etc) and just 165 RC.  What that tends to suggest is that rather than being an indigenous Irish name, it probably came to Ireland as a result of Scottish and English settlers, typically from the 1600s onwards.

  • Hi Neil,

I have just joined this group, so I realize your post is old!

My name is Storey, my oldest found ancestor is Oliver Storey born 1798 in Drumalee, Cavan. He joined the Army, 58th Regiment of Foot and was posted to Jamaica.

In 1827 he married Emily Lord. My great grandfather Richard was born in Portsmouth in Hampshire in 1828.

The family then went to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) where James was born in 1832. I can't find any other children.

They returned to Belturbet in Ireland  in about 1840, where Oliver rented land (found in Griffiths Valuation) and became a farmer.

He died in 1863 in Belturbet.

Richard was also in the military, the Kings Royal Rifles, and lived in India, China, Japan, South Africa, Scotland and Ireland.

He took his wife and 8 children to Tasmania  in 1888.

I have not been able to find any relatives in Ireland.

I hope this helpful or relevant,

    Regards,

    Suzanne

  • Suzanne, Neil,   Seems there are a number of "Storeys" trying to identify their lineage through Ireland.  I too am one.  Might I recommend that perhaps if you have any male "Storey" family members who would be interested in testing their yDNA, it would help establish connections where perhaps records do not exist.  I joined Family Tree DNA and had mine tested. I joined a "Border Reiver" project through them as well as there are a number of people trying to document the familial lines from along Hadrian's Wall on both sides of the English Scottish border to worldwide connections.  There have only been a dozen or less Storey participants.  The more that do, the greater the odds of making that connection.  I have been struggling with my linkages in Ireland.  Elwyn has been a great help but short of going to Ireland to research records or hiring some one to do the same, the DNA testing was quick and painless. Over time I hope it will bear fruit!   Mark Storey
