Bridget Madigan (1831-1867)

Can anyone add to my knowledge of my Irish ancestors?

Can anyone help with information about my Madigan or Fitzgerald ancestors?

Bridget Madigan (b1831) was the daughter of Thomas Madigan (1799-1883?) and Bridget (nee Fitzgerald) of Rathkeale, Limerick.

Bridget  married James Boardman in Loghill, Limerick on 26 July 1856,  At that time, Bridget resided in Loghill and James in Glyn.

James Boardman was born c1820.   He served in the Royal Irish Constabulary between 1844-1868 in Limerick and later Cork and is recorded as a Native of Londonderry.

Their children were Mary Jane (b. 1858-1944), Bridget (b. 1859), Thomas Robert (b. 1862-1939), Harriet Allice (b. 1864) and Matilda Ann (b. 1865-1945) all born in Cork.  I am descended from Mary Jane who emmigrated to NZ in 1876.

Bridget died 2 January 1867 and her husband James Boardman died 24 January 1870 in Mallow, Cork leaving their younger children to be brought up by relatives.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a Thomas Madigan/Bridget Fitzgerald marriage record pre-1831. Likely the marriage was in a different parish from Ratkeale since Rathkeale marriage records are available from 1811 on. Usually the marriage was held in the bride's church so presumably Bridget was from a different parish nearby that does not have pre-1831 records. Baptismal records for Rathkeale RC parish have a gap between July 1823 and September 1831. This explains why I did not find a baptismal record for Bridget.

I did find a baptismal record in Shanagolden RC parish for a Thomas Madigan with parents Thomas Madigan and Bridget Fitzgerald date June 1 1826. Shanagolden is the RC parish just to the east of Loughhill and northwest of Rathkeale.

  • My 3x great grandfather, Thomas Fitzgerald, born 1780 in Rathkeale, came to Peterborough, Ont. in 1825 with the Robinson settlers. He married Margaret Jane Stillwell in 1806, born 1790 in Newcastle West. Records so far appear to show Thomas' father as Edward, born 1758 in Ballingarrane, Edward;s father as David, born 1724. I would like to further this ancestry, or connect with possible Fitzgerald relatives.

  • Hi Roger,

Thankyou so much for the research you have done on my behalf.  The baptismal record for Bridget Madigan's  presumed brother is a valuable clue for me to further try to locate this family.

The entry in the Parish Records of the Loughil Parish Church (United Chuch of England and Ireland) for the  marriage of Bridget Madigan to James Boardman on 26 July 1856, record Bridget's father Thomas Madigan, farmer.  The witnesses were Thomas Madigan and Townhend(?) Fitzgerald.  Townhend Fitzgerald could be Bridget's grandfather, uncle or cousin which may help identify her mother's Fitzgerald family.
