Hello, My name is Lisa and I'm searching for any family living in Ireland related to my 2x grandparents.  My 2x grandfather was John Manion also spelled Mannion and any records that might be available. I believe he was born in 1858 in Clifden, Galway, Ireland.  He was married to Anna R Connelly who was born in 1860 in Clifden, Galway, Ireland. They had three daughters born in Clifden; Delia Manion born 1880, Annie Manion born 1882, and Catherine "Katie" Agnes Manion born 1884 (my great grandmother).  They immigrated to the Unites States and settled in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania town called Carnegie sometime between 1884 and 1889.  They had  four more children in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, Mary Loretta Manion born 1889, Stephen Robert Manion born 1893, Margaret G Manion born 1895.  John Manion died in 1916 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania.  Anna R. Connelly Manion died in 1931 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not locate the marriage record for John and Anne and also did not find baptismal records for their three children which is unusual.

I then searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and found the civil birth record for Anne in 1882 and the civil birth record for your great-grandmother in 1884. In 1882, the family was living in Doohulla townland in Ballindoon civil parish. Ballindoon is south of Omey civil parish which includes Clifden. In 1884 when Catherine was born, the family was in Foorglass townland in Ballindoon civil parish. They likely used Clifden since it was the nearest big town.

I was unable to locate a likely baptismal record for John Mannion. There was an 1851 record in Clifden and one in 1862. There were none in the RC parish of Omey/Ballindoon.

I found the civil birth record for Delia https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…;   It was registered under Bridget (Delia is a nickname for Bridget). She was actually born in February 1881 and the family was in Foorglass.

There is an extensive Mannion/Conley family tree on Ancestry.com   Do you belong to Ancestry? Do you know a Jennifer Tinney?

John's parents were Patrick Mannion and Delia Foley. Anne's parents were Catherine Walsh and I could not read the first name of her father but they spelled the surname as Conley on the death record.

  • Dear Roger,

Thank you so much for your help in finding the birth records for Anne Mannion and Catherine Mannion.  I was unable to view the record for Delia/Bridget, I got an error message.  By the way, I would never have been able to figure out the Delia is a nickname for Bridget.  I do recall seing some sort of document that listed Anne's parents as Catherine Welsh and Fritz Conley.   I do have a tree on ancestry.com but I don't have a current subscription.  I don't know Jennifer Tinney, I'm assuming she is the person who has the extensive Mannion/Conley family tree you mentioned.  As soon as I renew my subscription I will look into it.

Again, thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated.

  • Is there any way to find out if there are any Mannion families still living in the area?

Yes, Jennifer has the tree I saw on Ancestry.

Both Mannion and Connolly/Connelly/Conneely are very common surnames in Co. Galway so likely there would be families in the area with those surnames. Suggest you consider a DNA test and see if you have matches with others with Mannion/Connelly connections and see if you can make a connection.

  • Lisa,

I just found this site and am in my first hour of browsing around.  However, I visited Clifden in 2015 because I know that my Irish family listed Clifden as the place they had immigrated from when they came to the United States.  My ggg grandmothers maiden name was Barbara Mannion.  She married Michael ?Cain/Kane/Keane/Coyne? (In the US they used Cain as surname).  In any case, I can assure you that there are a ton of Mannions still in Clifden.  On the main street of Clifden there is a great little pub called Mannions Seafood Bar and Restaurant.  Down the street from there is also Mannions Butcher shop.

  • I hope to go there some day. I've also found a group on facebook called the Mannion clan https://www.facebook.com/themannionclan/.  They have yearly family reunions in Clifden.  Where in the US did your ancestors immigrate to?  Mine immigrated to Pennsylvania, specifically the Pittsburgh area.  Are you on ancestry.com? Have you submitted a DNA sample? Just wondering if we are distant relatives.

    Sincerely,

    Lisa

    Lisa,

Yes!  I am on Ancestry.com and I have submitted a DNA sample.  My family ended up in West Virginia.  Initially in Barbour County and then in Pleasants County.  I have found a statement from one of my GGG uncles who lists Cousins in Pittsburg.  He gives their names as William McGowan and Bernard McGowan and states that they both served in the first world war.  As far as Mannions go, the only Mannion in my tree I believe is Barbara Mannion from Clifdon whom I mention in my previous message.  It would be pretty wild if we did match up on DNA though.  My profile on Ancestry is listed as "parrishmedlin".

    Slainte!

  • Parrish,

I don't have any McGowans in my family tree. I also checked ancestry.com and it said "parrishmedlin is either not a DNA match or has not taken a DNA test".  It seems odd that we both have a Mannion from Clifden but aren't even distant relatives.  I haven't had any luck finding more Mannion relatives.
