Hello ive hit a brick wall in trying to find my great grandmothers birth, I have her fathers name as on the marriage certificate as Samuel Clinton. She was born about 1843, her father was Samuel Clinton a clerk. i have no idea where in Ireland she was born, when she travelled to the UK, or if her father was Irish like her or if he was born elsewhere and moved to Ireland.

If anyone has any information or knows which way i can turn then please email me:

  • Hi Lisa

The only baptism record of Margaret Clinton with father Samuel on www.rootsireland.ie/ is 1880 in county Down.

There are also 2 baptism records for Margaret Clinton 1844 Antriim and 1846 Tipperary but the father is not Samuel

Your family tree on ancestry has Margaret's birth as 1824 but I couldn't find that record on rootsireland.

  • Thankyou for the reply I know she wasn't born as late as 1880, because of her marriage date.  I do however, know that the original surname was McClinton if thats any help with searching, the Mc was later dropped to make it more anglacised (?).  Throughout the generations Clinton has been passed down on the first born son as part of tradition, my great uncles, uncles, cousins, brother and even my own son as the middle name Clinton, although i have re introduced the Mc.
