This is what I know about my great grandmother. My great grandmother was Margaret Bolger who was born on October 9, 1859 in Tullow parish in County Carlow. She married a John Hayes in Tullow around 1886 and he died in 1887.   She also had a son named Matthew Hayes born on January 18, 1886.  Somewhere between 1887 and 1902, she came to the United States with her son as she married Peter Cunningham, her 2nd husband in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Margaret’s parents were Matthew Bolger and Maria Murphy and I know nothing about them.  I would like to find out more about the marriage to John Hayes as I have 3 different birth certificates for Margaret.  It looks like the certificates are copies that my grandmother requested from Tullow parish during the 1930's. Here is the info from the birth certicates

Margaret born on April 4, 1863 daughter of Patrick Bolger and Mary Murphy certificate dated May 25, 1937

Margaret born on April 4, 1863 daughter of Matthew Bolger and Mary Murphy certificate dated March 31, 1936

Margaret born on October 9, 1859 daughter of Matthew Bolger and Maria Murphy certificate dated December 1,1933

Based on Marriage certificate for 2nd marriage here in US, she was 35 when she remarried in 1902, which means she was born about 1867

According to death certificate she is listed was 70 years old when she died in 1938 which puts her born around 1868 and death certificate list parents as Matthew Bolger and Mary Murphy

Hopefully marriage info to John Hayes might clear up actual birth date as well as correct parents.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

    fourth record on this page has the May 17 1886 civil marriage record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…;

    Fathers of the bride and groom were Matthew Bolger and John Hayes.

    Matthew Hayes was baptized January 25 1887 in Tullow.

    I looked at the baptismal records on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the parish register and it would appear that the 1859 baptismal record is the correct record for Margaret. There is an April 7th 1863 Margaret Bolger baptismal record where the father was Patrick and the mother was Mary Murphy.  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634592#page/45/mode/1up

    Here is the register for the 1859 record which shows Matthew as the father. (The 1859 register was faint).  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634592#page/15/mode/1up

    The 1859 Margaret had the following siblings: Alice 1861 Marian 1864 Edward 1866 (died young?) Edward 1871 James 1872

    Matt Bolger and Mary Murphy married October 24 1858 in Ballon RC church. Witnesses John Bolger and Jane Neill

    I checked Ancestry.com and found a few more pieces of information which you may already have. The 1900 census in America has a Matthew Hayes born in Ireland in February 1887 living in a House of Refuge for Boys in Delaware County just outside of Philadelphia. I also located a September 1937 death record for a Matthew Hayes parents John Hayes and Margaret Bolger. He died of lung cancer. Matthew was a widower and his wife was named Margaret.

  • Thank you so much for confirming which birth certificate was correct for Margaret along with her siblings.  Maybe now I can search for additional family either in Ireland or US

    The Matthew Hayes in the House of Refuge for Boys may not be your ancestor but the age and born in Ireland match up.

    Not sure about why the marriage record link did not work. Here it is again. They do put you thru some identification hoops. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

    If the link does not work, I would try the search yourself. Go to www.irishgenealogy.ie  go to the Civil Records Tab Show Margaret Bolger 1886 marriage and Carlow registration district
