I am looking for information on my great great grandmother Mary Foy who was born circa 1841. Census returns show she was born in Killeevan, Monaghan. Mary married Charles Rielley/Riley/Reilly from Cavan and moved to Scotland in the early 1860s. They moved around the UK, eventually settling in Stockton-on-Tees in the North East of England where they raised their family.

I have found a Patrick Foy(e) farming 8 acres at Drumreenagh in the Tithe Applotment Books in 1825, a Charles Foy who witnessed a marriage in Newbliss in 1863 and a family headed by Margaret Foy living in Drumreenagh in 1901 and 1911, but no indication whether these people are linked to my Mary Foy.

Any information or suggestions for how to continue my research would be most appreciated.

  • Did Charles & Mary have any children born in Scotland 1861 onwards? If so, the birth certificates should contain details of where and when the parents married.

Sadly Killeevan RC parish has no baptism or marriage records earlier than 1867 so if that’s where they were married and baptised there are no records to find.

  • The following Foys were listed as heads of household in Co. Monaghan in 1861 in Griffith's Valuation:

    I hope this helps.

  • Many thanks for your replies. Charles and Mary did have a son born in Scotland, in 1864. I hadn't realised what information such Scottish births could provide so I'll certainly follow up that angle.

    Kind regards, Diane

  • The 1864 Scottish birth should be on this site:
