I am looking for information about my great grandmother, Mary Given (nee Gallagher). She was born in 1837 in Meendrain, married John Given from Croaghnamaddy in 1864 and died in the 1890s. I have not been able to find her death certificate. She had 8 children. Only one of the eight children remained in Ireland. His name was Charlie (1871 - 1898)  and he married Anne Gallagher from Cleendra, one of the sisters of "Paddy the Cope".  Mary's father was Owen Gallagher from Meendrain. I know nothing about her mother. Mary had three brothers whom I know of: Shane (1832-1905) who married Anne Boyle and had 13 children; John (1841-1901) who married Mary Harkin and had 10 children and Manus (1844- ?) who married Anne Harkin. I would be grateful for any information, but particularly to do with Mary's mother and also the year of Mary's death. Thank you, Anne (O'Kane)

You mention that only one of Mary Given's children stayed in Ireland and he was Charles Given and he died in 1898. There were no Mary Given civil death records before 1901 for someone from Meeldrain.  There is a 1910 Mary Given from Meeldrain death record. See fifth record.

    Informant was a Myles Given.

I found this 1901 census record  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Maghery/Meendr…; and there was a Mary Given from Meeldrain with son Myles and daughter Mary. I assume this is a different Mary Given?

  • Hello Roger, thank you for responding. Very much appreciated. My great grandmother was born in Meendrain, but after her marriage to John Given moved to the adjoining townland of Croaghnamaddy. John Given died in 1897 and it is recorded on his death certificate that he was a widower. My grandfather was the youngest child and born in 1879 in Croaghnamaddy. Reference to my Given family can be found in the book entitled, "My Story, Paddy the Cope" (Paddy Gallagher's Autobiography). In this book Mary Given is alive in 1887. Consequently, she must have died between 1887 and 1897, yet I can find no death certificate for her. Thanks again, Roger.

  • Anne:

Likely either the husband did not civilly register the death or the death was registered but surname was entered incorrectly which prevents finding the record when you search with Given.
