Mary McDonagh/McDonough was born in Killoscobe/Killascole, Mount Bellew, County Galway in around 1833.

Mary's father was William McDonagh (blacksmith) and her mother was Margaret Mannion (probably born in Menlough).

At the time of the 1851 Census, Mary was a pedlar of earthenware and living with Mr John (born Norfolk) and Mrs Mary (born Galway) Parker, and others, at 98 Upper Head Row, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. The others included Catherine, Peter and 10 month old Margaret Mulry/Mullery/Mulray and Bridget McDonough. It appears that Mary Parker, Catherine Mulry/Mullery/Mulray and Bridget McDonough were sisters and were cousins of Mary McDonagh/McDonough.

Mary married John Barrett (b. County Mayo) in Huddersfield in 1854. Mary and John migrated to Australia in 1858. Mary died in 1870. John died in 1879. Mary and John had four children - Margaret (Maggie) (b. Huddersfield), James (b. on the ship), Mary (b. Australia), John (b. Australia).

Mary McDonagh/McDonough is related to Honor Kennedy, who became the 2nd wife of John Collins - their children included the late Paddy Collins of Menlough. It appears that Honor's parents were John Kennedy and Margaret
McDonough/McDonagh, who married in 1870 in the Parish/District of Menlough.

Any information on Mary McDonagh/McDonough's relatives would be appreciated.

  • Just a few queries in order to see what information that you need

You seem to have accessed the marriage records in Menlough and in touch with the Collin's family (the late Paddy's sons) - Is that correct?

When you are looking for info on Mary's relatives are they the ones in Australia, Huddersfield or Killascobe or all 3.

Would be good also to know how you are connected

You probably know that the Mannion name has its origins in Menlough and there are many of that name in the parish

If you could clarify the info as above I would be more than happy to help out

  • Hello Martin.

Thank you so much for posting.

Mary McDonagh/McDonough is our great great grandmother and it is our relatives in Ireland who we are looking for at the moment.

We are in Australia and, as far as we are know, Mary is the only member of her family who migrated here.

With respect to Huddersfield, England, we think that there might not be any McDonagh/McDonough blood relations there. In 1851, our Mary was living in a household in Huddersfield that seems to have included three McDonagh/McDonough sisters (Mary Parker, Catherine Mulry/Mulrey, Bridget McDonough) who were apparently the daughters of Patrick and Catherine McDonagh/McDonough and cousins of our Mary. We understand that the three sisters left Huddersfield for the USA in 1851/1852.

Mary’s father, William McDonagh/McDonough seems to have died in 1884 (aged 84) in Killascobe, by which time he was a widower. Apart from their names, rough ages, marriage date (1829) and William’s occupation, we basically know nothing about Mary’s parents – not even where they are buried and whether they had other children.

We have had some contact with the family of John Collins and Honor Kennedy – mainly the relatives in England, Galway City and the USA. The general view is that Honor is a 'cousin', but no one has been able to work out the exact relationship between Honor Kennedy’s mother (Margaret McDonagh/McDonough) and Mary’s father (William McDonagh/McDonough). When Honor Kennedy and John Collins married in 1897, the witnesses were John Mannion and (another) Margaret McDonagh/McDonough/McDonogh (who was apparently Honor’s 1st cousin).

We have been able to access some church, baptismal, marriage and death records, but it’s a bit confusing, particularly from this distance!

  • I had a look at where William McDonough lived in 1855 on the Griffith's valuation It seems that there were relatives still living there in 1901 http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Mount_Bellew/Killas…

The name Mannion is very common in the area as you may well know as it was the centre of the O Mannion sept with The O'Mannion's chief castle in Menlough

As the name McDonough is not a common name around it would seem that William's family married into the place There is a James McDonagh recorded in Menlough Eighter in the Tithe Allotments of 1834 but other than that it does not appear in the parish

That points to any McDonoughs then from the area as being related and it would seem that if you have the records that you can conjecture a good tree from this

You mentioned Paddy Collins, Menlough I presume that this is Paddy in teh Post Office RIP and I will see what info hos family may have

  • Hello Martin.

Thank you for the information that you've provided - greatly appreciated.

Knowing that McDonagh/McDonough is not a common name in the area is, I think, good news! I'll focus a bit more on trying to find out what happened to the McDonagh/McDonough folk who are listed in the Census.

And thanks for undertaking to follow up with the Collins family.

    Have a great week.

  • Great news

Another volunteer from the area, Jimmy Laffey, was able to give me a match with your family and I will be speaking to your cousin later I just got off the phone with his wife and she confirmed the match

    From the 1901 census:

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Mount_Bellew/Killascole/1391681/

    Patrick b1851 married Mary Glynn

------ Patrick b1880 married Mary Carrick

                  -------  Mary (dFeb 2010) m Thomas (?) Scanlan

                                         ------- TJ Scanlan

From the ages I would think that William is grandfather to Patrick (b1851)  and Mary is possibly his aunt

Will let you know further when i have spoken to TJ

    Martin

PS What is your name ? Just realised that I don't know it to share with TJ

Can you do a quick outline of Mary and John Barratt's family - just your side would be good
