Hello from Long Island, New York.  We are in Phase Two- and I am looking forward to a haircut!                                                     Have been searching for their origins- and John Grenham's website suggests I look to this parish.                                                   What I know:  Mary Shea b. Ireland 1836 To Mary and Cornelius Shea per her 1890 death certificate had five children with Cornelius Sugrue (b. Ireland)                                                                                                                                                                Their Children:  John (1857-1913)       Kate (1858- 1898)     Denis  (1861-1897)    Anna (1864-1922)    Bridget Veronica (1868-1907) were born in New York/died in New York.                     Mary Shea Sugrue's 1890 obituary asked to be copied to Saint Joseph, Missouri- so I wonder if there is a SHEA connection in Missouri.                    Am checking Knockane because John Grenham's 1852 count placed 50 Shea and Sugrue families in this parish.                                                                                           Any ideas?  What records could be from 1852?   Any leads for searching would be really appreciated!!!                     THANKS- and be well!                               Ann Marie

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

From your note, I'm assuming that the mother of the 1836 Mary had a maiden name of Shea. (If this is an incorrect assumption, let me know.

So I searched on the free Irish government site www.irishgenealogy.ie and the subscription site Roots Ireland and the only baptismal record I could find was in 1823. See below. Likely this is not the correct record.

It is very possible that a baptismal record for your Mary is not available because the parish she was baptized in, no longer has records back to 1836.

By the way, Cornelius was likely also from Co. Kerry because Sugrue is almost exclusively a Kerry surname.

  • Good morning, Roger, and THANK YOU for this information!

Although there is a difference between birth in 1823 and 1836, it is not a huge difference.  Have found that most of my Irish ancestors were not exact on their year of birth (even some of those who were born in the USA)!  It is not impossible that Mary Shea had her last child in 1868, at age 45; and died at age 67 rather than age 54.  The fact that you found a baptismal record with exact names for her parents makes me think it is a very possible match!

Have not pursued records dating that far back in Ireland.  Have you suggestions for what records exist to review that family?

If it is my family, I know the daughter (Mary) had a son, John Sugrue, born in Ireland, while the rest of her children were born in New York.     That could mean she met and married Cornelius Sugrue in Ireland- possible near her birthplace (unless the family moved around a lot).

    Again, thank you!

Did not have much success searching www.irishgenealogy.ie  I did find a Cornelius Sugrue marriage to a Honora Shea in 1854 In Prior RC parish in Kerry. No baptismal record for a John Sugrue with the parents names but did find a Denis Sugrue baptismal record November 29, 1855 in Prior with parents Cornelius Sugrue and Nano Shea. I've seen Nano a few times before but don't know if there is a connection to Honora or Mary.
