Hi Enquiring about my Armagh born branch of the family. Catherine McAteer born 10/09/1848 in Donagh to John McAtee and Mary Keenan.

Also John (junior) born 09/06/1859 Armagh, Mary McAteer born 25/11/1864 Ballymore, Edward 18/12/1863 Armagh.

There were other children born in Monaghan and Down.

Any help would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.

Thanks from Joe McIntee Laughlin.

  • Joe,

I can’t add much to your information on the Irish aspects of this family but there’s at least one tree on Ancestry (Graham – Fleming family) which appears to record this family. If accurate, they moved to Glasgow between 1863 (Edward’s birth) and 1866 (birth of son John in Glasgow). 2 more children were born in Glasgow and the parents both died in that area (1888 for John) and 1874 (for Mary).  Scottish death certificates normally contain parents names so you may get one generation back by viewing them on Scotlandspeople.

Daughter Mary’s year of baptism was 1860 not 1864 as per your post. No townland on the baptism record so I don't know where in the parish they lived.

  • Dear Elwyn Thanks so much for the reply and info. I have traced my GGG Grandad John McAtee's death cert and he died in the Poor House, Fever Hospital in Dalziel Lanarkshire on 28th January 1888 aged 57. It shows his parents as Owen and Catherine Gardiner. That's as far back as I have them. So he may have been born (if death info is correct) about 1831, unfortunately I can't find a marriage cert for John and can't find any trace of his parents Owen & Catherine Gardiner so a bit stumped now. If there is anything further that you or others here could come up with it would really be appreciated. Thanks Joe McIntee Laughlin

  • Joe,

The Graham/Fleming tree on Ancestry has John McAtee(r) and Mary Keenan having a son Edward in Calton, Glasgow on 21.5.1873. There is a birth certificate that fits which says the parents married in Co. Monaghan on 15thAugust 1856. John was a carter and the informant was Mary who signed with her mark. They lived at 29 Brickfield Open, Glasgow.

Another child, Ann McAtee, was born on 4th May 1871 at 335 Gallowgate, Glasgow. That birth certificate records the parents married in Glasslough in Co Monaghan.  That’s in the RC parish of Donagh. So we have a date and place for the parents marriage.

The RC marriage records for Donagh are on-line on the nli website. However the records are fairly hard to follow. I have looked for the 1856 marriage but could not see it. You might have more patience and be more successful:

I searched for deaths for Owen & Catherine McAtee(r) in the Monaghan area 1864 – 1901 but there were none. So either they died before 1864 or had moved away from the area. (Did they move to Scotland too?)

  • Dear Elwyn

Again many thanks for this information. I will spend some time looking through the parish registers and see what I can find. They are proving a bit elusive so far..

    regards
