You have assisted me many times with the McCammon family of Northern Ireland.   I am typing this away from my home desk so some details may be sketchy!!!   I had a William McCammon, born about 1823.  He married Margaret McHaffey (sometimes different spellings) in Co Down in 1848 (William's father was John) and they had at least two children John and Jane, born in 1853 and 1856 respectively in Co Down. At the time I was assisting a family member in England who wanted to trace the whereabouts of all the family members who emigrated to Scotland, Canada and Australia.  We subsequently researched the descendants down to the present day – one chart is 3.5 metres long!

I have been contacted by a descendant of another William McCammon, who also had a daughter Jane – not sure of her birth date.  I do know that she married Richard Johnston in 1863 in Northern Ireland, and the family eventually emigrated to Australia, their daughter Josephine was  born in Sydney in 1875.  The woman who contacted me thought there might be a connection with “my” Jane and hers, but such is not the case.  The marriage that I have proves that.

Is there any way I can get information which would suggest a connection between the two families?  The family, generally, were farmers, but I suppose the Griffiths Valuations would not give a clear picture, and there were no census records available for that time?    Bottom line though – is it just a lost cause?!!

  • I suppose the first question to ask is where were the two McCammon families living? The 1848 & 1863 marriage certificates should both say where the respective families lived. I can find the 1848 marriage on the irishroots site. It shows that William who married in 1848 was from Carnacavill, Maghera. However I can’t find the 1863 marriage to Richard Johnston. There was 1 Jane McCammond marriage in 1863 but she lived in Islandmagee, Co. Antrim and married Andrew Ross. Can you let us have details of the Johnston-McCammond marriage?

Thanks Elwyn.  The 1848 marriage is the family I have been researching for some time.  I found the 1863 marriage on familysearch.com and have attached the only record I have (at least I hope I've done it correctly!).   There is no other record available on that site.

I'm beginning to doubt that there is any connection between these two McCammon families.

  • Shirley,

Thanks for the marriage information. There is something odd about it though. I searched the statutory records again on GRONI. I cannot find that exact marriage there. There is a Jane McCammon or Stevenson (so she was a widow) who married on 17.1.1863, registered in Castlereagh (which includes Knockbreda) but according to the GRONI indexes she married William Harper, not Robert Johnston.  Then I searched rootsireland and found William Harper married Jane Mccameron of Knockbreda (spinster) daughter of William Mccameron, mechanic, of on that same day. So that matches the GRONI information, albeit with a slightly different spelling of Jane’s surname. However it also has him marrying Margaret Sharmon of Knockbreda (spinster), daughter of Robert Sharmon, dealer, at the same church on the same day too.

On the face of it, William Harper had a busy day if he married 2 women at the same church on the same day. I can only assume that both LDS and rootsireland have some transcription errors in their data. That’s not unknown.  You can find the original marriage certificate on the GRONI site for £2.50 (sterling) if you want to view it, which should resolve who really married who.

Knockbreda is in the outskirts of Belfast and is 30 miles from Maghera and I agree there’s unlikely to be any connection between the two families.
