Hi,

I am researching my GGG Grandfather John McEvoy, born around April 1857. I believe he was born to Owen McEvoy and Alice Haughey in Upper Killeavy, County Armagh. I believe his sibilings were Margaret (b. 1849), Bernard (b. 1855), James (b. 1858), Bridget (b. 1860), Peter (b. 1863) and Daniel (b. 1864).

John married Sarah Clarke on May 22, 1887 in Meigh, Armagh. Together, they had at least six children. Michael (b. 1888), Mary (b. 1890), Sarah Anne (b. 1892), John (b. 1893), Patrick (b. 1895), and Margaret "Madge" (b. 1899). Michael McEvoy lived in Northern ireland his whole life, and died in December 1989. Mary McEvoy is my GG Grandmother, and married John Meehan in Newry in 1909, before having three children, and then splitting up with John Meehan. She then later got together with a Patrick Murphy of Northern ireland, and together they had ten more children, bringing the total for Mary to 13. She died in 1973, just a few months before her daughter, Bridget Meehan. Sarah Anne McEvoy married James Patrick Boyle, and together had two kids. She died in Brooklyn New York in August 1967. John McEvoy II. I believe may have moved to Canada, and not sure how long he lived. Patrick McEvoy came and visited my mother and her family in the early 1960s, and I believe he may or may not have died in England in 1972. Finally, Madge McEvoy married a Christopher Matthews, and never had any children. She died in the late 1960s in England I believe.

I am researching to see if anyone knows anybody related to the people stated above, and to see if any of the children of these McEvoy's might still be around today. To find the information I currently have, I have used irishgenealogy.ie, rootsireland.ie, and an old family tree with minimal information that my uncle made 10 years ago. If anyone knows anything I would greatly appreciate it. I also would love to know the names of the ten children that Mary McEvoy had with Patrick Murphy, as I have never heard anything about them. I have a letter that Mary wrote to her sister Madge in 1957, and she names four out of her ten children with Patrick Murphy, including Emma, James, Katie, and possibly Rose.

Thanks,

Mike

  • Mike,

Regarding Mary McEvoy’s 10 children by Patrick Murphy, from the dates you have given I assume that most if not all were born after 1917, and in Northern Ireland. If so, the birth records are not on-line. They are available to the public, just not on-line.  You can access birth records within the past 100 years in PRONI & GRONI in Belfast and nowhere else. So if you can’t get there in person you might need to employ a researcher to look them up for you.

The other thing that PRONI may have are wills for Patrick and Mary. Again these are not on-line (for the 1970s anyway) but a researcher could search for them. Obviously you would expect the wills to name some or all of the children.
