Hello

I had previously posted looking for information on the McKenna family. I'm looking for more information about the McPhillips.

My ancestors Elizabeth McPhillips and Thomas McKenna married in Ballybay on 16/05/1856. They moved to Scotland shortly after this.

I am trying to find out more about the McPhillips branch of the family. I have no idea the names of her parents or if they originated in Ballybay.

Is this something you could help me with?

Best wishes

  • Anthony,

The marriage is before the start of statutory marriage registration in Ireland (1864 for RC marriages). Normally prior to that you have to rely on church records. Ballybay is in the RC parish of Tullycorbet. Unfortunately their records only start in 1862, so there will be no copy of either the marriage nor of Thomas & Elizabeth’s baptisms to find (assuming they were both born in that parish). Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church you would expect that Elizabeth lived in Ballybay. (And Thomas may have done so too obviously but that’s less certain).

Did either of them die in Scotland? If so, you should get their parents names from their death certificates.

I searched Griffiths Valuation (1861) for McPhillips in Ballybay but did not find any listed in the civil parish.

I spotted this McPhillips family in the Ballybay area in the death records. Living in Corkeeran:

  • Hi Anthony,

I don't know if there is a connection to the McPhillips Family, but I have the following in my Family Tree.

James McPhillips born Abt 1801 Ireland married Frances Anderson.

David McPhillips  born Abt 1830 married Elizabeth Mulholland.

Elizabeth McPhillips born Abt 1833 married Edward Francis MacAulay (my granfather's first wife.

She was born in Fife Scotland and died in South Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland in 1906.

  • Hi both

Thomas died in Scotland, so I have his parents as John McKenna and Ann Braesland. I think Thomas was from Errigal Truagh.

As for Elizabeth, after Thomas died she moved to Rhode Island USA with i'm assuming family. I have yet to find her death certificate in the US.

John as for the people you mention, I have no idea. Elizabeth is the only McPhillips I am aware of currently.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Mr Daly
My Great Grandmother was Alice Mcphillips (Catholic) b Tussy, Carrickatee, Ballybay c 1880 d 1947 buried in Carrickatee Chapel Graveyard. She was married in 1904 in Glasgow Scotland to Joseph Campbell born and died c1880 d 1949 in Bridgeton Glasgow. There are numerous McPhillips in this area and a township near Glasgow called Hutchestontown. In Ballybay there are a few McPhillps of both Catholic and Protestant decent. Ancestry.com has been a great help. Eleanor

  • Hello

There is every possibility that it is the same family, with them being from Ballybay.

I had a lot of family who lived in the Hutchestontown area of Glasgow too.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Andy I have found more Mcphilips but no Elizabeth yet. I will keep both Mcp and Mckenna in mind for you. So bear with me.. The Mcphillips in Scotland seem to follow protestant faith but then intermarry with R.Catholics. I have found many mcphilips in and around Scotland. Scotlands people is a good site to use.

  • Hi Anthony,

A correction to my Elizabeth McPhillips, she was born in 1883 in Burntisiland, Fifeshire, Scotland and not 1833.

    regards, John
