Hello We were in Ireland in May, trying to trace my family,  we thought they were from Mayo,  we stayed in Dublin, spent time in EPIC.  then 2 days in Rosscommon, a few days in Ballina and 2 days in Galway.  We went to all the geneolgy research places.  We did not get any results.  on the last days we were told they were more likely from Sligo or Leitrim.  I looked in the phone book, and rang a few people, with the same names, no one knew f my family.. We live in Australia, otherwise we would have come back and searched more.

The people we are looking for aremy GGGrandparents, Who married in Wolverhampton UK in 1850 both state they were from Mayo,  Both fathers named Patrick.  We can trace the family from 1850.

they were

Owen McWeeney/Queeney and Mary Rowan/Ruane

Hope someone can help, I have put several post on Message Board,  but have not been able to find them

manyy thanks

Jenny

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

McWeeney and variants such as McWeeny/McAweney/McQueeney are almost exclusively found in Co. Leitrim. Rowan/Ruane is usually a Mayo surname. My guess is that Owen and Mary met and married in England.

Unfortunately, many of the RC parishes in Leitrim and Mayo do not have records back to 1830. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a Mary Ruane baptismal record with father Patrick around 1830 and no record for Owen McWeeney with father Patrick.

Both surnames are found in a number of parishes within Leitrim and Mayo so we can't pinpoint a particular area within the county.

You may want to add the emigration stories of Owen and Mary to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection. https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database
