I am looking for information on Michael Moran, born about 1854.  My grandfather was John Thomas Edward Moran, Born 1905 in Staffordshire, his father was Thomas Moran Born about 1884, he married a Catherine Mary Snape in 1904 in York.  Thomas's fathers name is given as Edward Moran, but this could be wrong.  I know that Michael came to Britain from Ireland about 1871, aged 17, he appears on the 1871 census living in Liverpool with his Uncle James Spruhen, James wife Margaret and his sister Mary Ann.  Michael married a Ann Walsh in 1878 in Stoke upon Trent. They are recorded as coming from Roscommon.

Michael and Ann's children: Wm Edward, 1880, Edward 1881, Michael 1883, John J 1885, Thomas1886, Annie 1887, Mary Agnes 1888, Catherine 1891

If anyone has any information that would be great.  I am hoping to visit Ireland in June to trace my Ancestors.

Thank you for any help

Susan

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is the only 1854 Michael Moran baptismal record on Roots Ireland in Co. Roscommon. There are also two 1853 Michael Moran records and four 1853 plus one 1856 and four 1857. So his parents names would be important.  How does Michael related to Edward Moran mentioned in your note?

  • This is difficult knowing who his father was, his marriage certificate says William but I have been told it was Edward.  Im afraid I have little information.

  • I will be coming to Ireland at the beginning of June if anyone has any advice on where I can start looking that would be a great help.  The latest information I have is that he could have come from Boyle and his mother is called Mary Higgins.

  • Hi Sue!

We might be making some progress. Using the mother as Mary Higgins, I located an 1856 baptismal record in Boyle RC on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Michael had an older brother John in 1853, brother Frank in 1860, sister Brigid 1862 and brother Hugh 1865. There could be other records for additional children if Mary was shown as Mary Moran on the record. Since Hugh was born after civil registration started in 1864, I was able to locate his civil birth record and the family lived in Warren townland also called Drum in Boyle civil parish. (See below) I did not find the marriage record.

Let me know if you think this is your family.

  • Hi Roger

It is possible that this is the family I am looking for, the dates correspond with information I have.

I hope to visit Boyle, Roscommon and Dublin to help me with my search.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi Roger I have found a marriage between Thomas Moran and Mary Higgins in 1819, this is the only one I can find.

We are in Ireland and have been to the Parish Church at Boyle and looked at the Parish records but couldn't find anything to do with Michael around 1854-5.

We will keep looking hoping to find something.  I will keep you updated on our progress.

    Thanking you

  • Sue:

Sometimes the baptismal info did not make it to the register. I have two great-uncles in Roscommon born in 1886 and 1887 and their baptismal records are not on the parish register.

Hi Susan, I am Anthony (Tony) Moran.  I came accross this thread whilst browsing.  I too am a grandchild of John Thomas Edward Moran, and a descendant of Michael Moran.  I wondered if it would be possible for us to compare information?

    Regards

    Tony

  • Hi Tony

Cousin Sue, Auntie Kitty's daughter.  We have been in touch before via Genes reunited, I think.  I am still doing my family tree with the help of Ian and we are stuck on Michaels side of the family.  We didn't have much luck in Ireland.  I don't mind comparing notes but they are limited. I havn't been on this site recently especially with the situation we are in at the present.

  • Hi Sue

Nice to hear from you.  I remember Auntie Kitty & Uncle Harold well.  I hope you and your family are well.  It is a shame Covid is affecting everyone so much.

What I have is fairly limited too. If you fancy getting together anytime, just say (it is a shame I only seem to see most of my family at funerals :)  ).  I am in the Knaresborough area these days.  Where are you?

I went to County Mayo looking for information a couple of years ago, but with limited success.  Our family weren't great at leaving detailed records, and our surname was so common there I could never be certain I had the right person.  Especially as there seemed to be lots of John's, Thomas's & Edwards'.

  • Hi Tony I know what you mean as soon as we got there and started looking round a lot of the shops were Moran and we came away with lots of pictures of grave stones havn't unravelled them yet. The only information I ever got out of mine was that Grandads family were farmers and completely in the wrong place.   I am in York and like you only see family at funerals.  It would be nice to meet and put our heads together hopefully the situation will ease soon and it will be possible.
