Hello from Illinois, USA

My ancestors name was Patrick Richard Morgan born March 23, 1823 (according to his grave marker in Chicago, IL USA) His father was Richard Morgan.  I found online a baptismal record dated January 1825 listing parents as Dick Morgan and Mary Breen. (see attached, line #9)I am not sure if this is my Patrick's record. The place of baptism was listed as Newcasle or Newbawn.  Do you have any other records for Dick/Richard & Mary (Breen) Morgan?  The only other background I have is that Patrick was very knowledgable about horses. So much so that he was a big supplier of horses to the Union army in the American Civil war and a vetrinary surgeon also.  I'm assuming his family may have been in some sort of horse trade. He left Ireland about 1839 as a teenager.

Thank you for your time looking at this inquiry.

  • The family residence looks like Newcastle, which does not seem to be the name of an official townland in the Catholic parish of Adamstown/Newbawn - possibly a local name.  The parish had three chapels one at Adamstown, a second at Newbawn and a third at Cullinstown/Cullenstown.

I located a sister to that Patrick Morgan in the baptism records for the parish - Catherine Morgan baptised 21st Mar 1817 (last entry on the page), family residence is also Newcastle, the  sponsors (godparents) are Patrick Breen and Mary Murphy. Unfortunately the marriage records for this parish only go back to the 1840s, so a little too late for any marriage to Richard and Mary. A search of the baptism records for the parish shows at least one other Morgan family at the same time - a Michael Morgan and Brigdit, there's also a laterr (1860s) Bartholomew Morgan and Betty/Elizabeth.

The best way to fully confirm that this is "your" Patrick Morgan would be with US records - e.g. his mother's name on a death or marriage cert, a clue as to where in Ireland he was born e.g. from an obituary etc. The difficulty with searches for records during this timeframe is that there are a great many parishes that do not have records going back this far, so there may have been other Patrick Morgans born around this time for which there is no baptism record available.
