Hi My   name is Catherine from Hobart Tasmania Australia.

I am asking for assistance to research my Gr Gr Grandfather John Moroney.

He arrived in Australia in 1861 aged 22 on board the Calcutta with  his mother Margaret a widow aged 45.

I have no other information other than the Sponsor of the trip was Mr Thomas Farrell.

I believe from my research in Tasmania that Thomas Farrell may have been married to John's sister Mary.

If so they may have been married in Ireland.

John died in Tasmania aged 40 in 1885,so he was either born in 1839 or 1840.

I have difficulty understanding his mother Margaret's age as she was listed as 45 in 1861 with a birth year of 1816.

However when she died in 1877 it was stated that she was 86 years old ? making the birth year 1791.

Did they lower her age to allow her to travel.

I have no idea which Parish they came from and would like any assistance possible to at least get me started .

    I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found some leads. I searched for John Mulrooney baptismal records with mother Margaret and found a couple in Co. Kilkenny which are below. One of them had a sister Mary (which is not surprising since Mary is a common name).  I also searched under Moroney and ther were about four records around 1840.  I did not find any Mary Moroney/Mulrooney marriage records to a Farrell in Ireland on Roots Ireland.

    I think your next step is to try to locate Catherine's maiden name if possible.

    Have you considered DNA testing?
