I am descended from James Moroney (b. 1816) and Anne Coughlan (b. 1822) and their children were baptised in this parish.  An address of "Shallee" was given.  I am wondering if anyone from either family still reside in the area.  I'd also like to see a marriage record for James and Anne, or birth records of either, but I am certain they no longer exist.

  • Hi Mike

There is a baptism record of James Moroney Tipperary 1815 on www.rootsireland.ie/

However the record is from South Tipperary and the parish St Marys Parish Clonmel R C

There is also a baptism record of ANNA Coughlan 1817 same parish as above

There was no marriage record however

You need to purchase cedit to view the full record on rootsireland but it MAY have the father's name

The Tithe Applotments 1824-36 (free to search online) in Tipperary has 15 Moroneys (0 in Clonmel) and 31 Coughlans (4 in Clonmel)

Griffiths Valuation - also free to search - has 42 Moroneys in South Tipp and 6 in the North Tipp

    Coughlan has 5 South & 26 North

If you search the Irish phone book Residential (eircom) you'll find 15 Moroneys and 18 Coughlans in Tipperary

  • Thanks, Col, for that very interesting find.  I wonder if it could be them.

How common was it for the "common folk" to move such distances (Clonmel to Shallee) during that time? I understand it was quite rare.

Something else that makes this interesting is that James & family wound up in a small town near Auburn New York once he made it to the US.  There was another Moroney in the same town, Michael Moroney, b. abt 1808-1810.  I assumed at first they were brothers but could never find a connection.  Someone else on Ancestry.com has Michael in their  family tree, with a birthplace of Modeligo, Co. Waterford.  From this (assuming it's correct) I assumed the weren't brothers after all and the common last name was coincidence. Modeligo is closer to Clonmel but still not close for those times.  I also know for sure Michael had a sister Mary (b. 1811).

    Off to rootsireland.ie!
