I believe my great-great grandmother Mary Anne Mulrooney (born 1834), and her sister Catherine and brother Andrew or John were in the Carlow workhouse for a time. I will be in Ireland for 2 weeks arriving this Tuesday 6th August, 2019. Where do I search for these records?
Thanks Therese Moloney

  • The Board of Guardians Minutes (management meetings) have survived and are in Carlow county library, but it doesn’t appear that the admission books still exists. They are what you really need. See:

    Good morning Therese:

The Carlow library that Elwyn mentioned is the place to go and Bernie is the historian there who will be able to guide you with further records.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Thank you Jane. I will look out for Bernie. I’m back in Ireland now doing more family history research. Do you remember taking me out to the old Flaherty home at Derafada in May last year? That was very special. I am staying in Ennis tonight and tomorrow night. I have my 13 year old grand-daughter Ruby with me. We are going to the Ennis Local Studies Centre to do some research on her great-great-great-great grandfather Edmund Kenna who was married to her great-great-great-great grandmother Johanna Mulready. They had three children that we know of: Cornelius, Margaret and Patrick. Ruby is descended from Patrick who was born in Ballymalone, near Scarrif in 1831. Patrick immigrated to Australia in 1861. Apparently some relatives still live near Scarrif but are called McKennas. Regards, Therese

  • Hi Therese:

Yes, I do remember and I'm only back in Ireland today after being on vacation for the last week!  It is great to hear from you and please let me know if you want me to meet you in Tulla.

Yes, there are McKenna/Kenna relations in Scariff.  If you need me to contact or try to find out further information, let me know.

It's great to hear from you.  I hope that you enjoy your trip.

    All the best,

  • Hi Jane, I would love to catch up in Tulla. We are driving from Carlow to Silvermines Tipperary today where we are staying for a few days. Ruby would love to meet a McKenna/Kenna relative from Scarrif, if possible.
We will fit in with you. Driving distances is not a problem for us.
    Kind regards,
    Therese

  • Hi Therese:

That sounds good.  I'm meeting a visitor today in Broadford, but I will be available for some part of tomorrow.  Leave the Kenna cousin to me and I will see what I can do.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Therese:

unfortunately I am only seeing your message now. I’m in Tulla today and you can contact me via email at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

I have not been able to find a Kenna connection to Ballymalone but the Kenna families lived in Ogonnelloe.  There is a volunteer there who may be able to assist if you can give further information.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

    All the best,

    Jane
