Timothy Hickey was born about 1796 in Tipperary, Ireland. His parents were John Hickey and Bridget Ryan. Timothy married “Peggy” Margaret Hogan 1827 at Grant’s Town, Tipperary, Ireland. Peggy’s parents were Patrick H Hogan and Mary ?. Timothy was convicted of grievous assault at Tipperary on 12/1/1838. Sentenced to 7 years to be transported to Australia. He is listed as being 40 years old, married with 2 male children and 5 female children the oldest being 10 years old. He departed from Dublin on the ship Clyde on 11/5/1838. It was the Clyde’s second convict voyage to Australia. His wife and 6 of his children eventually joined him in Australia. The children's names were Mary, John, Johanna, Bridget, Kate and Patrick. One child I believe was buried in Ireland and may have been called Eleonora. I cannot find records for the family's voyage to Australia. Are you able to find where Timothy and Peggy's parents are buried and any other information about the family.

  • Hi  Grantstown  is  in  the  civil    and  Catholic  parish  of  Kilfeacle  between  Tipperary  town  and  Cashel.     There  were  Hogan''s  and  Hickey's  there  in  the  Tithes  1833.  There  were  lots  of  Hickeys  in  the  nearby  Townland  of  Ballinard,  in  the  civil  parish  of  Rathlynin  catholic  parish  of  Donaskeigh.   Kilfeacle  would  be  the  local  graveyard.  The  headstone  inscriptions  are  done  in  book  form  and  are  in  the  reference  section  of  Tipperary  town  library.  I  will  look  through  it  next  time  im  in  Tipp.  and  see  are  there  headstones  to  your  ancestors.  Will  try  and  research  some  more  material  for  you  also.    Let  me  know  how  you  get  on.  Best  of  luck  with  your  research.

    God  bless  and  kindest  regards.

  • Hi Christina, thank you so much for your reply. Already I have learnt something from you. I have seen that place Donaskeigh in my records I have of the family. Thank you very much for your help.

  • Looking  through  Peter  Maddens  Shipping  list  of  Tipperary  people  to  Australia1850s  I  came  across  John  Hickey  aged  18  from  Donaskeigh   parents  Timothy  and  Margaret  Hogan  in  1848  the  name  of  the  ship  Hyperbad.  Perhaps  you  have  this  already.   Hope  to  get  to  Tipp  next  week  to  look  up  headstone  inscriptions.

    Kindest  regards.

    Christina.

  • Thank you Christina, John Hickey is the only one I can find any record in shipping. There was a Johanna on the same ship but I don't know if it's his sister because the age is not quite right.
In your first email you mentioned there were Hogans and Hickeys in the Tithes. Can you explain what that means?
    Many thanks, Colleen

  • The  Tithes   were  lists  of  property  made  out  beytween  1823  and1837.  Persons  living  in  towns  cities  and  those  with  less  than  one  acre  were  not  included.  You  can  access  this  yourself  at    www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie  Click  on  browse,  click  on  Tipperary,  click  on  Templenoe,  click  on  Grantstown.   Go  back  and  click  on  Rathlynin , click  on  Ballinard.     Templenoe  is  the  civil  parish  taking  in  most  of  Kilfeacle.  There  was  a  church  there  in  the  18th  century.  there  is  still  a  graveyard  there  and  I  am  trying  to  find  out  were  there  headstone  inscriptions  done  for  it.  There  was  a  similar  but  better  list  of  property  done  circa 1850  you  can  also  access  this  at  www.askaboutireland.iegriffithsvaluation.ie   .  Use  the  civil  parishes  as  above.

You  can  also  access  the  1901/11  census   at  www.census.nationalarchives.ie   .   There  were  Hickey's   still  living  in  Ballinard  in  1901.

    Hope  this  helps.

    God  bless.

    Christina.
