Hello, i’m Trying to trace my family history. Apparently the last letter came from Westmeath. I just had my first pilgrimage to Ireland and stayed in Dublin. Dublin seemed like Chicago to me but, when I went to Galway with a tour. I specifically went to Galway because that is where I traced the name to. I went into Naightain’s pub sat with my daughter and told her the story of this side of my family. While on the tour I found out what the potato famine was all about. It was the most epic emotional experience I ever had. I realized that my ancestor had left home in 1847....the phrase potato famine is thrown around so much and here in America we don’t teach our kids about world  history until they are in High School. I realized from an Irish point of view what my ggggrandparent must have had to endure. The trip really made me feel like I was home. I know it sounds trivial but, I took the trip to Galway on a bus tour and the potato famine was the story. I feel so much more part of life because I have a story in my mind about how it must have been. Not just being part of a society that couldn’t care for itself but, a part of a society that was supposed to just die and amazed that we survived even though our family unit did not. It was overwhelming when I saw my daughters name and shadows of the Naughton name sprinkled in the stories that I have found and they were all there so there must be some truth to it all. Can anyone help me connect? I can’t find any other documents online except the name In New York, passenger list. I have no other family to ask..they have all died out. They never had big families once they moved here.

Thanks, Kat

Do any of these first names look relevant to you? I can post the full record on the site of any that do.

Great you got to see Dublin & Galway! The Irish are indeed a tough lot!

The 1901 Irish Census (free online at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/) has 74 Naughtons in Westmeath & the 1911 has 63 but Ballyloughloe isn't mentioned

  • Thank you for trying to help. Thomas Naughton the one that emigrated would have been born in 1821. He has a father named Anthony and mother named Bridget that stayed behind. All the names I find through genealogy research here crosses through Montgomery County Missouri through farm community.

    Thank you, Katherine Vines-Warr

  • You may be a descendant of the Naughton Clan in Glentrasna, Oughterard. Our lineage still owns most of the land there.
