My great grandmother, Catherine Maloney sailed to USA in 1884. I was told she was meeting her brother but never connected. The info I have found is, she was born in Dec. 1867. The passenger list (I think was my great grandmother) listed her last place of residence as Limerick, she was a gentleman's servant. A census stated she was born in the Irish Free State. She married George Martin in Saint Patrick's Catholic Church 18th July 1887 in Jersey City, New Jersey.  I wish the records stated what city, town or village she was born in. My Mother said she was from County Mayo. I don't know of her brother's name she was to meet with in the USA. I am stumped, I've been to Ireland but I would like to go where she is from.

  • Hi Kerri,

The only Catherine Maloney born 1867 on www.rootsireland.ie/ was in Tipperary

However, when the name is spelt Moloney there are 6 matches for 1867: 2 in Tipperary, Limerick Galway Kildare and Cork Of these only Galway is not in the Irish Free State so no help there

    No Mayo records either

HOWEVER, I looked on ancestry.com and your tree has her birth as 1865 according to the 1910 US census on which she was aged 45. The censuses were taken 1 June each year so if she had had a birthady that year she was born 1865 but if she hadn't it was 1864 so I searched on rootsireland for births/baptisms in 1865 + - 1 year and got 6 more Catherine Maloneys including 2 from Mayo - 1 in 1864 & 1 in 1866 The others were Kildare Roscommon Limerick & Waterford

rootsireland charge to view the full record but they would have the father's name and the parish

  • Kerri,

I wiould be searching the US Census beyond 1887 in Jersey City, New Jersey....if you are lucky your ancestor did not move far once they emigrated.  Cheers, Mick

  • I would look under the spelling Mullowney at least for Mayo anyway. Also I believe Galway was in the Irish Free State. Only 6 of the counties of Ulster were not and they were - Derry, Antrim, Tyrone, Down, Fermanagh & Armagh.
