    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you clarify the connection between John O'Donnell and the Slevins? Also, do you have approximate years of birth and any other info which might assist us in locating these individuals. Thanks!

  • Hi, Arthur O'Donnell married Anne Slevin in 1871 she was 22 he was 26, after that they moved to Glasgow in 1874/5 we can trace them after that it's their parents we can't trace and they were John O'Donnell ( dob unknown wife unknown) Edward Slevin and Anne Slevin ( nee Thomas) rob unknown

Arthur and ann married in pettigo but we're sure they came from Donegal town area inver, John and Edward were registered as farmers. Unfortunately that's all we know.

    Thanks bill

The civil marriage record shows that both families were living in Fincashel townland in Templecarn civil parish. Finding church records for that area is difficult since they are not included on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Here is a link to the parish register which has baptismal records starting in Mary 1851 and marriages in January 1836. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0290

I also looked at another subscription site FindMyPast.ie and did not find a baptismal record for Arthur and Anne. Both were likely born before the start of records in March 1851. Also, did not see any marriage records for the parents in Carn RC church also known as Pettigo or Belleek. You may want to scan the marriage records on the parish register to see if you see any records for your family.

I also checked the 1901 census for Fincashel and did not see any Slevin or O'Donnell families.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

There are a number of companies that provide the service. Ancestry DNA is the largest, 23 and Me, Family Tree DNA etc.  Price is around $79 for the test although there are sales around Holidays.

After you sign up, a kit will be sent to you with instructions. You send the kit back and it takes about five weeks for results which will include matches in strength order meaning your closest matches on top. You tehn e-mail the top matches and try to determine where the connection exists either on your maternal or paternal lines. Your matches will be people living in the USA, Canada, Australia or possibly Ireland and other European countries where you have ancestors. Hopefully, you will match people who have O'Donnell/Slevin connections and maybe they have more info on the family.

I would also recommend adding your raw DNA data to Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com
