I'm trying to trace information regarding my great grandfather, all I know is that his name was John O'Sullivan and he was from Westcove, around the Black Shop. One of his sons was Michael, my grandfather, who at some time in the late 1800's early 1900's came to Eyeries in West Cork and started a tailoring shop with Timothy O'Connell. He married a local girl, Mary Harrington(Urdail) and raised a family in a house in Direenacappaire. Their children, to the best of my Knowledge, were, John, Molly(Mary), Catherine, Bridie, Mike (my father), Gerry, Patrick, Dan and Tadhg. All the girls emigrated to America. John, Mike and Tadhg went to England. At sometime before 1939 the remaing family moved back to Kerry. I have visited the old house on a holiday in the late 1980's. I remember a staigue fort and the white strand. The strand was a particular feature because when I visited my maternal grandmother, I could see it from above the house, looking north across Kenmare bay. I would like to have more information regarding my great grandfather's family, his parents and his siblings and where they all lived. was there a clan name. I know my grandfather was known as "Mike the tailor".

  • Dear Tailliur:

    Thank you for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

    I believe that the following link is your grandfather, Michael OSullivan who was listed as a tailor in Eyries in the 1901 Census.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Kilcatherine/Eyer…;

    He was living with the O'Connell family in Eyries.  You will note that there are two Michael O'Sullivans one aged 17 and the other aged 22.  The 22 year old was born in Co. Kerry, and it would appear that he is most likely your Michael O'Sullivan.

    You may be able to find civil births, marriages and deaths through the Irish Genealogy website under the Civil Records tab.  Their address is:  www.irishgenealogy.ie

    I am going to alert two volunteers in the local area to your post and hopefully they will contact you via here.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jane,

      thanks for your interest. All I know of my grandfather was in my post. I don't know if he had brothers, it seems impossible that he didn't. I know far more about my maternal grandfather and grandmother's family. When we were in Ireland we always stayed in West Cork so I know all the placenames and family history, who stayed and who looked for their fortunes outside Ireland. I've made contact with the families of a brother and sister of my maternal gandfather who emigrated ta America in the early 1900's. I would love to be able to do that with my paternal grandfather's people.

      It's good of you to find local sources who might help. One further item, I seem to remember a placename of "bracaheragh", I'm sure the spelling isn't correct but I think that might be the area that the family was from.

       best regards,  John.
