My 2nd Gt Grandad was Patrick Gibbons/Gibbins (1839) in the England 1851 census he's aged 14, a lodger and coalminer in Thornley, Counrty Durham. Some of the others listed are Mary Gibbons (28), unmarried and Bridget Bohan (50) widowed. The relationships are not listed.

In the 1861 census he's aged 21 a coalminer and living in Thornley with mother Bridget Gibbons aged 62 (I know the ages on census' are not always accurate).

Patrick married Mary Ward in 1865 their marriage certificate shows that his father was Patrick Gibbons (deceased). One of the later census' shows that Patrick was born in Leitrim. I found what is probably his baptism record as Bridgert Bohan (from the 1851 census) is his mother.

Name:Patt Gibbin  Baptism Date: 23 Mar 1839     Baptism Place:Leitrim, Fenagh, Ireland  Other Event Place:Curnavad  Diocese:Ardagh  Father: Patt Gibbins   Mother: Bridget Bohan   Sponsors Bernard Bohan and Honor Bohan/Gibbins (there's just a ''ditto'' after Honor's name)

Other possible siblings I found were:

Ann Gibbins,  Baptism Date:3 May 1826   Baptism Place: Leitrim, Fenagh, Ireland   Diocese:Ardagh  Father:Patrick Gibbins  Mother: Bridget Bohan  Sponsor Peter Gibbins and Bridget ?

Bridget Gibbins   Baptism Date: 2 Apr 1841      Baptism Place:Leitrim, Fenagh, IrelandOther Event  Diocese:Ardagh    Father: Patt Gibbons    Mother: Bridget Gibbons Sponsors Michael ? and Mary McDermott

I wasn't able to find any other records for the Mary Gibbons (1823) listed in the 1851 census

Patrick's Children with Mary Ward were Hannah, Catherine, Mary Ann, Winifred, Margaret E, Matilda, Peter Thomas, Theresa and Agnes (My Gt Grandma).

I'm looking for any links or records for Patrick's parents Bridget Bohan (Abt. 1801) or her husband Patrick Gibbons (Abt 1801) and any other children they had - the gaps in between the births I have are quite big Mary (1823) to Bridget (1841).

Does anyone know if it was common for Irish ladies to revert back to their maiden names when widowed? I've found it a couple of times when they've settled in England from Ireland as widows with children.

Thanks

Catherine

  • Catherine:

You are fortunate that your ancestors were from Fenagh because most RC parishes in Co. Leitrim have records starting after the 1820s. As you can see from the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0165 Fenagh baptismal records start in June 1825 which would explain not finding a record for Mary Gibbons. Also there is a five year gap in baptismal records from the end of 1829 to the end of 1834 so possibly other children were born in that time period. You may want to scan the register to see if there are any other Gibbons baptismal records that were not transcribed by the Roots Ireland staff.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows three Gibbins records in Cornavad: Mary, Edward and Peter. Not sure how they connect with Patrick who likely died before 1857.

I can't answer your question about Irish ladies reverting back to their maiden name after being widowed but it does appear in this case that Bridget went back to Bohan.

Not sure what the relationship is.

  • Hello and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

I would think it would be very unlikely that she reverted to her maiden name as her children would have the fathers name.  I have asked a few people on this and all said the same thing.

If you look through the Fenagh Parish Registers there are lots of Bohans and Bohan is still a very popular Leitrim name

Ann Gibbons baptism record is attached below and her Godparents (Sponsers) were Peter Gibbons and Bridget (its difficult to make out the surname)

I would think Peter Gibbons was a brother of Patrick

  • I see in the Registers that Peter Gibbons had a son Patrick with Mary Eavers

  • Thanks everyone, I'll start to check out the Peter, Mary and Edward links.

Hi Patricia this might be a relative but my Patrick's last child was born in 1839 and another possible child in 1841, thanks for the link, it's something else to investigate.
