I'm researching the family of Patrick Joyce (abt 1817-1916) and his wife Mary Flaherty (abt 1840-1880). They were married on Feb 6, 1862. They had nine children from 1846-1879, seven girls, and two boys. Most of the children immigrated to the US. At least one son stayed in Ireland. I know from family history that the Joyce's were from Ungwee, but I'm trying to find out where the Flaherty's were from.

Thank you for your help,

Mary Jo Strauss

  • Hi Mary Jo!

It will be difficult to determine where the Flahertys were from in the parish of Ballynakill. The oldest son appears to be Michael? If this is correct, then there were three Michael Flaherty records in the 1855 Griffiths and likely the father of Patrick was one of these three records.

    Flaherty Michael Cloonlooaun Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Michael Gorteenaglough Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Michael Tully Ballynakill Galway

Let me know if you have any other information.

  • Thank you, Roger, but do you mean the father of Mary and not Patrick? Mary was the Flaherty, Patrick was a Joyce.

  • Mary Jo:

My mistake! So was Michael the second son? I don't see another son when I search for baptismal records for children of Patrick Joyce and Mary Flaherty.  If Michael was the second son then possibly he was named after Mary's father. Here are all the Flahertys in the Griffiths.

    Flaherty Edward Cloonlooaun Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Edward Rusheenduff Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Francis Cloonlooaun Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty John Roscrea Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Michael Cloonlooaun Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Michael Gorteenaglough Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Michael Tully Ballynakill Galway
    Flaherty Patrick Mullaghglass Ballynakill Galway
Flaherty Simon Lettergesh East Ballynakill Galway

Let me know if you have questions.

  • As far as I can tell, Michael was the second son. I have looked on irishgenealogy.ie and found birth records for all the children except Mary, the oldest. I have also checked on All Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911, and did not find any more sons born to Patrick and Mary. I didn't find Mary's birth record on that site either, her birthday comes from her descendants.

I will check out the Flaherty's you found.

Again, thank you for your help.

  • Hello Roger,

I have found more information about Patrick Joyce and Mary Flaherty. It turns out my connection to the family is through Patrick Joyce, not Mary Flaherty. Patrick's dates are 1817-1916, can you see if you have more information on him? I know he was buried in Ungwee, Ireland.

    Thank you,

    Mary Jo

  • Mary Jo:

Leaving for Ireland today, There won't be any birth records for Patrick going back to 1817. You may have these records but here are the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
