  • Hi Peter,

If you have access ancestry the Condren public member tree has Patrick, Annie & Stephen all born in Kilkenny, and Mary Ann born in Tipperary (parents John Harrington & Elizabeth Carmichael).

    I searched rootsireland.ie for Patrick & Annie's baptisms/births but got no results.

The only records of Patrick McCarthy on the site are 2 baptisms - 1 in 1786 & 1 1788 both in Dublin & the surname is Carthy an early version of the name.

Similarly the only birth/baptism for Annie was 1792 Louth.

    I tried searching for McCarthysborn in Kilkenny in 1787 + - 1 year and got 3: Mary 1788 Margaret 1788 & Richard 1786.

In the Tithe Applotments (free to search www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) there are only 4 McCarthys in Kilkenny & no Patricks.

So no great news I'm afraid Peter.

There are no source citations with the Kilkenny birth claims so I can't check them.

I assume you have seen the name Patrick on Stephen's record so Richard is not a possibility.

I couldn't find a record of Stephen's birth in Kilkenny or in any county; the only close 1 was a Stephen McCarthy father Patrick baptised in Limerick 1830 (not mother Ann though).

There were 2 matches for May Harrington born 1828 + - 2 years in Tipperary but the parents weren't John & Elizabeth.

I had a look for Stephen's arrival but couldn't find that either - they are elusive!!

Let me know your thoughts and whether you have any more info or ideas of where else to check.

    Col

  • Hi Col

Have been in contact with Condren tree owner and found Stephen McCarthy death cert. Surname is McCarty. The 'h' missing ?  Will this help?

    Thanks

  • Hi Peter,

I'm not sure if you're asking whether this could be your man given the spelling difference or whether getting the death cert will be of any value so I'll answer both.

There were transcription errors, illiteracy issues and whims ( 'I think I'll spell the name a bit differently') to make the case strong for this being your man.

I am unsure of what information you will get on the death certificate. The certificates are usually $31 (NSW) but there are transcribers who will do it for $18.

I couldn't find the record on NSW & Victoria BDM but there was no record so it must be in another state.

If you know the state in which he died you could email a transcriber (google state name BDM Transcription) and ask what information would be included on the certificate. You can then decide whether it will contain anything you don't already know.

Disappointing that this is the only source the tree owner gave you!

  • Nice work Peter - you did better than I did! Just as well you didn't take my word for it!

I had another look on rootsireland.ie for Patrick MCCARTY''s birth 1787 + - 1 all counties and got 2 matches: 1787 Longford & 1786 Wicklow so I can't find evidence of Kevin Condren's Kilkenny theory..

    I tried again for Monaghan Ann born 1792 + - 1 all counties and got 4: 2 in Louth 1792 & 1793 & 2 in Meath 1791 & 1793 so no Kilkenny there.

Still no luck with their marriage though.

I searched for the death records also but no luck.

Patrick & Annie were only 53 when they died.

There are 322 McCartys on the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free to search) but only 22 MonOghans.

The only thing I can suggest is that you post again as you did on 21st Sept but this time instead of Ireland say Kilkenny to see if anyone in that county can make a connection.
