I'm looking for any information for Matilda Patterson. She was a gilmour from Drumardnagross and married James Patterson on July 16 1856. I'm guessing they moved back to Aughnamoe as her headstone (Dromore Pres church) says that. She had at least two sons Matthew and Alexander. I'm hoping to get a bit more info about her family as I only have info (scant) about her dad.
thanks

  • Doug,

Birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. I searched the GRONI indexes for children born to James & Matilda 1864 onwards and found:

    James 8.1.1864

    Robert 23.9.1866 Aughnamoe

    Jane 19.9.1868

    Sarah 22.1.1871 Aughnamoe

    Martha 23.5.1873

    Catherine 22.10.1875

    Alicea 10.11.1878

For children born before 1864 you would need to search the local church records, which are likely to be in PRONI. Dromore Presbyterian’s baptisms start in 1835. Matilda was born c  1838 so you may find her baptism there too, together with siblings if there were any.

    Matilda died 5.4.1888 aged 50.

James and 2 children in 1901 in Aughnamoe:

    James in 1911:

    Probate abstract:

Probate of the Will of James Patterson late of Aughnamoe, Dromore, Co. Tyrone, retired farmer, who died 16 December 1917 granted at Londonderry to James Patterson, Aughnamoe, Dromore, farmer. Effects: £61 2s 6d.

The will itself is not on-line. It should be in PRONI in paper format.

There was a second Patterson farm in Aughnamoe. Presumably the 2 were related.

  • Hello! We are researching the same family line. On Griffith's valuation James, Samuel and William Patterson all tented land from the Hamilton Family. I am researching the William side - I would appreciate any other info you find! William was father to Alexander (Sr), then to Alexander (Jr),  my great grandpa. Alexander (Sr) lists his home when he was married as Aghnamoe, and his father as William.

  • I am also wondering...I think William died young and his brother James may have taken Alexander in. Can you share if you found Alexander in family record please? William is crossed off on the Griffiths Valuatuon 4 years later, with property going to Samuel Patterson, son of Jamess

So that makes sense. There is a gravestone project in Co Tyrone for Dromore Presbyterian church. I found a picture of Matilda's headstone there. See below. On the headstone it reads " erected by sons Alexander and Matthew" . Considering James and Matilda's wedding date, Alex was born before that and she would have been 13 or 14. Not unheard of but ...  I wonder if William also had another son named Matthew?

Also on the same page are text files from the headstones. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/tyrone/photos/tombstones/1headst…

There are other pattersons listed there. Have you seen that? There are references to a Samuel Patterson there. I haven't looked at that line but will to see if I can link this new information somehow.
