Peter Scully was born in Carlow around 1832. He married Ann Norton in Carlow in 1850 - the record is below

Name:Peter Scully

Gender:Male

Event Type:Marriage

Marriage Date:Apr 1850

Marriage Place:Tinryland, Ireland, Ireland

Diocese:Kildare and Leighlin

Spouse:Anne Norton

I have the baptism records for 6 children Johanna (1851), Anne (1853), Bridget Ann (1856), Thomas (1860), Anna (1867), Mary (1970).

The family move to Sherburn Durham sometime before 1881 where they show up on the census. A record of the 1891 census is below.

Peter and Michael Scully are listed as nephews. In the 1901 census Michael is married and is living with his brother Matthew Scully (1873). When searching on Ancestry I found a Bernard/Bryan Scully (1837) m Catherine Curran (1839) record below

Name:Bernardus Scully

Marriage Date:7 Jan 1865

Marriage Place:Tinryland, Carlow, Ireland

Father:Bernardi Bryan Scully

Mother:Johanne Rourke

Spouse:Catharina Curran

They had 4 sons and a daughter Peter (1866) , Michael (1868), Matthew (1873), Bernard (1877) Kate (1891). I have baptism records for the boys but not for Kate. Kate's existence came from Irish census records (Kate is listed as Daughter on both) which I've pasted along with Matthews Baptism record below.

The dates of birth for Peter, Michael and Matthew from the Baptism records match the English census records. I looked for other children of Janey Rouke and Bernard Scully mentioned in Bernard/Bryan and Catherine Curran's Marriage. From Baptism records I found the following children:

I was unable to definately link Peter (1832) to these siblings as the marriage records I have access to don't list the parent's names.

I'm trying to Link Peter (1832) to either an Edward Scully (1821)m Maria Johnston with Shrule connections through his possible father Bernard Scully (abt1801). Edward;s son Patrick (1842) and James (1838) (I have theirs and other siblings baptism records) lived in Sherburn in the same and nearby streets as Peter. Some of the children of all three Patrick, James and Peter were married and christened at The Sacred Heart and English Martyrs Church, Thornley, Durham. I'm hopeful there is a link, they could be cousins, or as I can't be sure of Peter's parents brothers or similarly there could be no connection at all.

I'd be grateful for any help you could give me relating to Peter Scully and any potential siblings of his possible father Bernard Scully (1801) and also if there's a baptism record or marriage Kate Scully 1901 or Marriage record for Matther Scully (1873).

Thanks Catherine

  • Dear Catherine:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

Would you consider creating Ancestor Profiles for any of the above ancestors that you have referred to?  You have a lot of information and it would be very helpful if there was a profile for at least some of them on the website.  Our members all have access to view the profiles and they are updated weekly.  Often, you may find that you are researching the same family as someone else and it can lead to great collaboration.

The link to create a profile is below:

  • Hi Jane, I have what I think are the records for Peter's parents. If it's the same Mary, I've spoken to her too but about another Scully family.

Peter's parent's were Bernard Scully (abt. 1802) and Johanna Rouke (abt.1812)

Peter's Sister, Mary Scully 1832 m Martin Kehoe and moved to Liverpool, she is listed in 1871  the cenusus as living with Peter and Ann's daugher Johanna Scully (1851).

Johanna later marries Nicholas Boyle and settles in County Durham near her parents. I've got the records and connections in an ancestry tree, I can give you access to it.

Peter's' Brother was a Bernard/Bryan Scully - he married Catherine Curran - I was able to make this connestion from Peter's nephew's who were listed as living with him and Ann in the different census'.

My e-mail is cath_scully@hotmail.co.uk if you want to get in touch it would be great to swap stories - I have quite a few newspaper cutting for Thomsa and Elizabeth while they were running the pubs.
