[A kind respondent advised I post my original message on the Clonkeen Parish board here also. (Below)]

Looking for any record or remembrance in Ireland of the family of John P. Roane [or Ruane] who was born in 1831to Patrick & Cecelia Roane  "from Athenry." He wed Mary Hurney [daughter of Martin and Bridget (Fahey) Hurney] in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA in 1859 - and ran a grocery business there.

My research indicates he was ill (probably with tuberculosis) and left his wife and family for Ireland in March 1869. He may have hoped the ocean voyage would restore his health. He died in  Colmanstown, Galway [Parish of Clonkeen / Cloonkeen] on 28 Nov 1869. - He had JONES cousins and associated with a Patrick HILLARY whose mother was a Bridget ROHAN.

Known siblings include a brother, Patrick Roane, who purchased farmland in Iowa (USA) in 1856 the same day as anEdward Roane bought adjacent property, and a sister, Hannah Roane, who died in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1866.

I've been told there are no records for the time and place, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Many thanks for reaching out.

  • Hi Christine,

I've forwarded your request to a volunteer in the Athenry area who may be able to assist or advise you.

    All the best.
