I have found my great-grandparents marriage in the parish register of Muckalee in August 1859. The placename where Thomas Saunders is from is listed as Crecaun.  I have serched extensively to try and find this place, but without success. I cannot find it listed anywhere.

There is a large family of Saunders listed in Knockmajor. I feel sure they are related to Thomas.  Does anyone know if Crecaun was close to Knockmajor, and what is it called now. I even contacted the Ordanance Survey but they had no information of it.

Any information woud be greatly appreciated.

I searched also and did not find any placename that comes close to Crecaun. The best I could do was a Cassagh townland a few miles down the road (southeast) from Knockmajor. I looked in the Tithe Applotment listing for Muckalee parish to see if Crecaun was a subdenomination (part of a townland) but the name does not appear in those records. I did find an 1833 Tithe record of a George and Michael Saunders in Knockmajor (misspelled as Saundery in the Tithe transcription).

  • Many thanks to Roger and Jack for your swift replies.  I had checked the tithe records and I have been to the Muckalee graveyard and I saw the Saunders gravestones from Knockmajor. The problem is that I do not know the name of my great-great grandfather because the church records for Muckalee parish is missing for 40 years due to flooding or something.  My great-grandfather Thomas was born in about 1825 and the records are missing for this period, so I can't trace the family back any further.

Also I'm confused because there seems to be two different Muckalee parishes, one is the barony of Fassadinin  and one is Knocktopher.  Is one Catholic and one civil or something?

I can't seem to get over this hurdle unfortunately.

There are two Muckalee parishes. The one (yours) in North Kilkenny is in Fassadinin barony. The one in South Kilkenny is actually split into two baronies: Iverk and Knocktopher.

  • Mary,

The name Crecaun refers to a part of the townland of Knocknadogue which is also in Muckalee parish. I am not sure what the origion of the name is and it is probably only used locally and will not be found official documents.  Knocknadogue was in Castlecomer parish at one time and a search of their records might be worthwhile. I will enquire locally if anyone knows of a Saunders family living there and let you know how I get on. If I can be of any further help just ask.

  • Hello John,

Thank you so much for this information. You have made my day. This is the first piece of positive information I have receied on this placename in 6 years. I had contacted Ordanance Survey, Roth House and Castlecomer Library.

Where did you find this information. Do you live in that locality. I will definitely follow it up and I would be very grateful for any further info that you unearth.

    Best regards

    Mary
