i have been researching my 3x great grandfather John conway for a year now and i am unable to find anything other than his marriage and death in Tullamore more importantly his birth certificate along with his mothers name.

i have managed to find his death on13th july 1892 at age 52  years of TB in Tullamore workhouse his occupation stated as a shoemaker. His marriage to his wife Bridget Maguire was on the 14th july 1868 he was 28 her 19, they had 9 children during there marrige again his occupation is a shoemaker in Tullamore his farther is named on the certificate as Micheal Conway occupation shoemaker, but no mothers names. I have searched the biggest sites and the ireland site but about 9 johns come up with fathers as Micheal.

i have his regimental record it reads 41 year old Pte 144 John Conway a shoemaker of Tullamore, Kings County, Ireland who enlisted in the 62nd Regiment of Foot in 1860 at Birr, Kings County, Ireland (now County Offaly) and served for 21 years of which 6 years was in British North America (Canada) and 11 years in the East Indies.

He intended to return to Tullamore on his discharge which occurred in early June 1880 at Netley, Hampshire (likely at the Military Hospital there after he had a medical after his voyage from Aden) shortly after he landed from his troopship at Southampton.

The regiment returned to Canada in 1857 and remained there until 1864 when it came home.[16] A year later, the regiment returned to Ireland and engaged the Fenians in an action at Kilmallock while defending some police barracks in March 1867.
Two years later, the regiment returned to India and traveled through the Punjab in July 1879.[26] The regiment then transferred to Aden in 1880.[16]

the 62nd was linked with the 99th (Lanarkshire) Regiment of Foot, and assigned to district no. 38 at Le Marchant Barracks in Devizes.[27]His Military Character was assessed as “ very bad” on Page 1 with P2 & 3 (duplicates) recording his various brushes with Military law. It also states on P1 that he is listed in the Regimental Defaulters book 85 times and was tried by Court Martial 7 times.

The marginal note states he is given to drunkenness and absence but is otherwise a clean soldier and respectable to his officers - some might say a typical mid Victorian era soldier.

so i know somethings but now i am really struggling if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.  thankyou

Apologies for the late response. Am trying to catch up on unanswered queries.   A few pointers about your GGG John.  Maybe it is a mis typing of dates - if John died in 1892 aged 52 he would have been born circa 1839/40. You have it that he joined the Army in 1860 aged 41, which would indicate he was born in 1819 or 1820.  Another pointer if he was away for 16 years with the army it may not have been possible to have had 9 children.  There may have been 2 John Conways who have overlapped with some common information.

I have found a birth record for a John Conway born to a Michael Conway and mother Alice Kelly in Banagher (another town in Co Offaly, not too distant from Tullamore) - baptised on 22/2/1839.  What would make him the correct John Conway for the John that Married Bridget Maguire is that they had a daughter baptised on 22/2/1874 named Alicia Conway.(Registered as Convey - errors were common)   It was traditional to name children after the parents' parents.  And Alicia/Alice are not very common names in use.

I don't know if any of this infomation helps - if you need any further clarification please re-post.

    Kind regards
