I'm researching the MOYNAHAN / MOYNIHAN and QUIRK(E) family from the Cork area, this part is particularly a puzzle (and has been for many years now):

My 2x great grandmother, Ellen, appears to have her name changed from Foley to Quirke on her marriage certificate (attached), her father is stated as a Quirke, yet on the birth certificates of all Ellen's children, her maiden name is stated as Foley.

I've looked for her birth as a Foley, and as a Quirke, but can't find her anywhere.  On the census's she states Midleton, Cork, Ireland as her place of birth, she moved to England sometime between 1884 when her second child was born (in Cork), and 1887 when her 3rd child was born (in Plymouth, England).

I think I might have found a baptism for her with the mother called Honora Flynn - that is the only record I have found with the father as stated on the marriage certificate, and in the same timescales (again based on dates from Engish census records), but that doesn't explain the Foley element, and I can't find a marriage for Michael Quirke to Honora Flynn.  Neither can I find a death for the father.  I've also looked at the thought that Ellen may have been married first, but there is no Quirke and Foley marraige that appears to fit the timescales, again with the father of the bride being Michael Quirke.

I'm also struggling to find her husbands birth. I have his military record which states he was born Sept 8, 1853 in Queenstown, Cork. but I can't find any record of his birth.  Again all I have for his parentage is on the marriage certificate - Timothy Moynahan.

So other than the marriage certificate, I can't find any further details about the two before they were married.

Could anyone help me out please as I've been searching for these two's parentage for over 4 years now, and getting nowhere!

Thanks

  • Elise:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has an 1854 baptismal record for an Ellen Quirke parents Michael and Honora in the Midleton RC parish records.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

  • Thanks Roger, as you can see from my original message, Ellen's baptism I had already found (I think), it's the actual birth record that I am looking for that goes with this, along with other elements, to try and understand where the name Foley fits in, especially as that is what's been put down on her children's birth certificates.

  • Hi Elise ref your post as I live in Midleton I will take a look at the church registers & see if I come up with anything. There will not be a Civil Birth Cert for Ellen as Civil Registration only came in 1864 .Regards Frances

  • Hello Elise on checking the headstone inscriptions in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Midleton the following:

John Foley d. March 25th 1926/His wife Ellen died July 11th 1928/Eileen Quirke Died 27th November 1938. Couldnt see death for Eileen in the indexes registered in midleton also not on 1901/1911 census. Wonder is this connected to your Ellen. ? Frances

  • It doesn't sound like my Ellen as she married a Moynahan and moved to England between 1884 and 1887, though that doesn't mean there isn't a connection.  As I have no details about her before the marriage in 1877, I know nothing about siblings, parents/grandparents etc, so they could be relatives.

I have recorded Ellen's life after she married John Moynahan, including her death (she died in Plymouth, Devon, England in 1910), but I have nothing (other than a possible baptism) before the 1877 marriage.

    Thanks for looking.

  • Wow, thanks for that.  This is more than I had hoped for!

Can I be cheeky and ask if you can find if they died in the same parish?  I'm assuming Mary (b. 1843) died not long after given they had another daughter called Mary.  I'm also assuming Michael died in the parish as he is classed as deceased on Ellen's marriage certificate.

Maybe Honora re-married a Foley after Michael died may explain the Foley on her marraige certificate, but doesn't explain the reason for her using it on her own childrens birth certificates.

    Thanks

    Elise
