I am hoping to come to Borrisokane to search for geneology records of family that came from there.

Brothers Thomas Reid (1813), William Reid (b-1811), James B. Reid (b- 1815), John C. Reid (b-1816) and Samuel Reid (b-1818) were all born in Borrisokane, Tipperary and left to come to Canada starting in 1831.  One brother, Joshua (b-1810?), remained on the family estate in Borrisokane and in 1895 the Reid family there was represented by his sons,  Samuel Golding Reid, Esq.(1851-1925), Mountain Lodge, Tomevasa and James Freeman Reid, Esq.,  St. Kivens Road, Rathgar, Dublin.

I have some written history from 1935 that also states "The Reid family setled in Borriokane, Tipperary Ireland in the fifteenth century and held considerable land around Lorshal."

This is all the information I have and I would love to connect with someone in Borrisokane who could help me with research on the Reid family prior to coming to Ireland.

With kindest regards,

Wendy

  • Thank you so much Roger!  Most of the census records state "Church of Ireland" under religion for the Reid family.  There is a Chuch of Ireland in Shesheraghmore, Borrisokane that may have graves for some of my family ( listed are Samuel Goulding, James W., James Freeman of Killen House).  I am also very interested in Killen House history and its connection to my family.  John Clifford Reid, my great grandfather (1840-1925), son of Thomas Reid (1813-1895 from Borrisokane), married Isabella Killen in 1920.  Isabella was also married to John Clifford Reids brother, James C. Reid (1848-1914).

I cannot find any information on "Lorshal" that was mentioned in the 1935 written history and feel it is incorrect?!

Very excited to be planning a trip to Ireland from Nelson, British Columbia, Canada.

    Thanks again,

    Wendy

Maria Ann aged 56, she was Samuel G Reid’s wife. I saw that her maiden name was Stanley. This is how Charles had Stanley as his second Christian name.

    Notes…………

You have Tomevasa………………. It is Toomevara or Toomyvara.
Lorshal is incorrect as well it is Lorrah   (lorra)

If you look via Google at a map for Nenagh Tipperary. Follow the road north, you will come to Ardcrony  keep going and you come into Borriaokne. Go north towards Portumna and then slightly right for Lorrah.

Come back to Nenagh and look right and north you came to Toomevara

Toomevara means the Toombs of the O’Mearas

I hope this is a help.

  • Wendy:

Lorshal could be Lorrha which is a town and civil parish town north of Borrisokane.

If you have not heard from the parish liaison by June 14th, please let me know.

    Hi Wendy:

I am too tracing my roots back to Ireland. John Clifford Reid was my great grandfather too!

My father was Walter Brydon Reid born 02-14-1928 died 03-10-1981 when I was 12 I know very little about my fathers side of the family besides a few great aunts that have passed.

His parents were Willam Marshall Otto Reid and Viola Thomas.

William Reid's mother Isabella were from Co Donegal, Ireland I better a little place called Cranny. Married to Isabella Killen and John Reid.

The 3 Reid brothers from Tipperary settled in Innisfil Ontario.

My husbands family is from Ireland Castlerea, Co. Roscommon ( he is there now) and we go over every few years. I have never go to Co Donegal but when I do I would like to check out some family connections. I know the Killens build a church in Cranny years ago  and ran a old mill. I would to see what you have found out. My email is shannonreidflynn@gmail.com

I was sent this someone I can't remember who on the Reid side was doing the family tree on anscentry.ca maybe it was you lol

    Take Care Shannon

  • I an visiting Borrisokane at the end of March 2018. My great grandfather was Thomas Reid born 1813 who emigrated to Canada. I'd really like to know more about the Reid family and why Joshua was the only one who remained behind was it because he inherted?  I understand the Reids owned land around Lorsha, where is that? Where is Killeen House? Are there any Reids still in the area?

Any information would be great thank you

  • Hi Guys,

The Reed/Reid family  settled in Lorrha during the 1660's as part of the Cromwellian settlement. They also rented land north of Borrisokane (Goatstown) .

At the beginning of the 19th century there were two Reed families in the area.

The Ardcroney family are not related. Killeen was held by James Freeman  Reed.

The Lorrha property and some shops in Borrisokane by John Reed.

I have found descendants from  those who emigrated to Canada & USA.

The spelling of the surname was changed abt 1850 to Reid.

The information in Elizabeth Reid Donaldson document is only accurate for Canada not  Ireland.

"Mountain Lodge" Poulakerry was rented by William Woods about 1850 and was settled on his step son Samuel Goulding Reid on his marriage 1877. Mountain Lodge was sold in 1903 when the family moved to Shinrone .

There is a lot of information missing from the early part of the 19th century as to who was around and who left.

The C of I record's only exist from the  1820's. Some of the family records were lost some years ago.

The Canadian records and family trees all start one generation after they left.

So lot's still to do with very little info!

  • Hi, Sue,
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromwellian_conquest_of_Ireland
It may take some to time get read all about this.
I did trace one family for a guy in Tipperary, he pointed out an inscription that was on a stone over an archway.
All I had was his family name and the year.
Took some time but I did trace them back to Berwick On Tweed, in the 1600'swhich at that time was in Scotland.
Problem is I don't keep any records after I have completed a search.
    Cheers
    Margot

  • The spelling of the surname before 1850 would suggest North of  England  possibly Northumberland  rather than Scotland

  • Hello! I am a decedent of  Michael Reid who left Borrisokane in 1859. He was married to Bridget Lynch in 1855. They also had two sons in Borrisokane, William (born 1857) and Thomas (1858). I am looking to find out who Michael Reid’s parents were. I know there were two different Reid families but when I read that one of your ancestors stayed behind it gave me hope of some knowledge of birth records as They are quite hard to read. Thanks in advance!!!
