I am trying to locate the family of Lily Reynolds, lived in Carrick on Shannon, County Leitrim, Ireland.  I do not know if Reynolds was a maiden or married surname.

I have two letters that Lily wrote to my grandmother in 1948 and 1953 and the return address is Carrick on Shannon.  Lily calls my grandmother, "Aunt", but I do not know is this is a courtesy title or if they were related.

In Lily's letters, some of the people she mentions are -

a brother, Brian;

Fr. Bennett,

Fr. Paddy,

Mrs. McNeff, and

Mrs. E. Simons.

I would like to learn how (if) Lily is related to me.

Thank you.

  • Hi Ann

The 1901 & 1911 irish censuses are freely available online

In the 1911 there are 1100 Reynolds in Leitrim with 5 in Carrick-on-Sur:

    Clare age 15 Ellen 66 Francis Frank 69 Bridget 72 & Terrence 26

Do any of these names ring a bell?

  • Hi Col,

I have read the letters again and these names are not mentioned.  In one of Lily's letters she writes, " My brother Brian has been called for his medical and interview for Sept. 23rd and if he passes there he will be sailing from Cork on December 11th D.V."  This letter was written in 1948.  I haven't a clue what D.V. means.

Thank you so much for replying.

  • While my wife's maiden name is Reynolds we are unable to help you.

I suggest you refer to some Catholic Digests as I note there are 2 priests listed. in the family.

DV stands for 'Deo Volente' (hope my spelling is correct!) ie 'God Willing'.

    Hope your searchs prove fruitful.

Keep trying, I spent 12/13 years tracing my family and eventually succeded in getting back to 1509. Hare effort is always rewarded.

    Richard.

  • I am a niece of the late Lily Reynolds, I presume she was speaking of her brother Bernie who emigrated to US around 1948.

She was single and she managed her aunts shop in Carrick on Shannon

  • Hello,

I have not been on this site for quite awhile.  I apologize for not replying.

I have found some additional information over the past 1 1/2 years. Lily's mother, Catherine (Kenny) Reynolds, was my grandmother's sister. Catherine was married to Michael Reynolds. I know that Bernie was married to Sally and that they had one son. From Lily's letters, she mentioned Michael, Molly, Anne, Phyllis and Norah. I know that Norah is the only sibling still living.  I have not found many answers to my questions but I have found that Lily was my great, great aunt.

Do you know who the aunt's name, do you know if she was a Reynolds or Kenny? I am still hoping to find more family.

Thank you for replying to my post.
