Robert and Lucinda are my GG Grandparents who married in 1849 in Parish of Leny, County Westmeath, which is now not in use. They had 3 sons while still living in that vicinity and in 1856 migrated to New Zealand.  They settled in Masterton and had more children.

I have a lot of information after their arrival to New Zealand but don't have any of their life or any family prior to leaving Ireland.

Lucinda's mothers name was Dorothea Kendrick (from family knowledge) but no source to check if that is correct.

If anyone has some information I would be so grateful.

  • The marriage is included in the Civil BMD Index and therefore must have been non-Catholic (since it took place before 1864), presumably Church of Ireland ?

The early Church of Ireland records for the parish of Leny/Leney are listed as lost, but baptisms back to 1840 do seem to be available so there should be records for the children. There are transcripts of some Leny Church of Ireland baptisms on RootsIreland (pay-website), but these only cover back to 1860 at present. The originals are held in the Representative Church Body Library in South County Dublin.

The marriage cert for Robert & Lucinda is available in civil records, and this would add a few details - e.g. their residences at the time of marriage, father's names and occupations, names of witnesses. Marriage register images are currently available back to 1870 on the free IrishGenealogy website, earlier research certs can be ordered from the GRO - see this link for details on how to order a research cert from the GRO. The references for the Dagg/Wilson marriage are - 1849/District Mullingar/volume 8/page 330. There's a partial extract of the marriage record on FamilySearch which includes the date 4th October 1849 and the name of the bride's father - Henry Wilson.
