Hey all - trying to find info on some ancestors with the name Rogers I have that come from Donegal. The family eventually ended up in Ohio and Wisconsin, and from I can tell, the branch that emigrated began with James Rogers (1738-1841), his wife Grace (1756-1845), and their children Edward (1792-1869), John (1802-1882), James (1807-1891), and Joseph Patrick (1812-1895). There may be a sister Catherine, and possible other siblings, as well. I'm guessing James and Grace married between 1780-90, but haven't found any records of it, or any hint of where in Donegal they may have been from.

Would love to hear from anyone who may have these folks in their tree or an idea of how I should proceed.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, finding church records for Co. Donegal back to the early part of the 19th century is basically impossible and civil registration did not begin until 1864. Rogers was a common surname in Co. Donegal based on the 1857 Griffiths Valuation data. The parish with the most Rogers was in Templecrone located in the northwest coast of Donegal. However, the surname was found in many other parishes so you can't be sure on the location.

I think your first step is to test your DNA and when get your matches, you may find someone who has more info on the Rogers line and where they originated. The match  person could be in Australia, Canada, USA or even Ireland.

You can also add the emigration story of James Rogers' and his family to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

  • Roger - many thanks for the reply. I have had my DNA tested, and unfortunetly no Rogers family yet. I've found a few Irish matches but nothing from this line, as far as I can tell. I went ahead and added James to XO Chronicles, so hopefully that'll help.

  • Not sure what company you tested with but here are two suggestions to expand your matching pool. There is a volunteer run site called Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com  where you can load your raw DNA data and see what matches you get with people who tested with other companies and also loaded their data to Gedmatch. Second, MyHeritage is allowing people to load their raw DNA data to their data base for free thru December 16th.
