I have a newspaper article from Ontario, Canada newspaper that says Moses and Elizabeth Ruth immigrated to Ontario, Canada approx. 1822-1824 from County Cavan, Ireland.  They settled in Emily Township, Victoria County, Ontario West.  They are the great grandparents of my grandmother.

I cannot locate them in County Cavan or any other county for that matter.  If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.  They are a mystery and a brick wall.

Thank you

Louise

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland for all of Ireland and was not able to find a marriage record for Moses and Elizabeth. I also did not see a baptismal record for Moses. I assume the couple was Church of Ireland? The C of I records for Annagh parish are available on Roots Ireland back to 1802 so if they were married in that parish a record should be available. Likely the marriage occurred in another church which does not have records back to the early 1800s.

Youm may want to add the emigration story of Moses and Elizabeth to our XO Chronicles site  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hello Louise, Roger has done the heavy lifitng as usual however I recently came across a photo of a Ruth family gathering in Manitoba the having come from Cavan, I have downloaded it for my own use from one of the two Facebook pages on Cavan Genealogy. There are previous queries on Ruth Family on this site, searching Ruth alone will bring back Christian names, the name is also found in Tipperary and is apparently a corruption of the Kilkenny name Rothe.

I recently discovered via DNA that I have small Ruth matches, I have Tipperary and Cavan ancestry and had assumed it was via Tipperary. From the previous queries I have email contact with two other posters on the site here. This is in case we stumble across any further information on the name. You can mail me here at the site on stpeters@irelandxo.com if you wish to establish a contact.

  • Not sure if I am replying to Roger or Pat so hello to both of you !

On 1852 Census of Emily Township, Victoria County, Ontario I have Moses and Elizabeth Ruth listed as born in Ireland and belonging to Church of England.

Children listed are:  James b 1822, George b 1825, Elizabeth b 1827, Jane born 1831.  James and George are listed as born in Ireland and Elizabeth and Jane are listed as born in Canada.  All listed as Church of England which I am not sure if that even existed in Canada.  I have noted that Moses was buried at St. James Church, Emily Township, Victoria County, Ontario, Canada.

Somewhere along my travels I have noted a Samuel Ruth, Purt St. Townland, Templeport Parish, Cavan 1826 and David Ruth, Dereran St. Townland, Templeport Parish, Cavan 1826.  Not sure if they are related or not,

Trying to upload newspaper article but not entirely sure if both pages are attached !  Geezz

I do belong to a FB page for geneology for County Cavan.

I have considered DNA testing but unsure as to which would be the best ?

I can't seem to do email via this site as I won't use Outlook so if anyone wants to reach me you can do so at LLzBellz@aol.com.

    Kindest regards

Pat and I are both notified that you replied to our comments. We try to keep all of our correspondence on the IRO message board.

Great article on the Ruth family reunion.

You posted this comment   Somewhere along my travels I have noted a Samuel Ruth, Purt St. Townland, Templeport Parish, Cavan 1826 and David Ruth, Dereran St. Townland, Templeport Parish, Cavan 1826.    You found these names on the Tithe Applotment listings which are found on the National Archives site. It is very possible that Moses came from Templeport parish.

There are a number of DNA companies-- Ancestry, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage, 23 and Me and others. I have tested with Ancestry and Family Tree. Ancestry has the largest data base but Family Tree has better analytical tools. If you decide to test, you will get a number of matches and you should contact your top matches and try to determine which line the match occurs. The hope is you will have a match with someone with Ruth connections who has more datat on the family in Ireland.

  • Hello Rosie, welcome to Ireland reaching out, there are 3 John Ruths born in Kilkenny from 1830 to 1840 and the nearest one is 1834, the other 2 are in 1830 and 1831.

    Name:John Ruth Date of Birth:

Date of Baptism: 02-Aug-1834 Address: Ballyhale Parish/District: BALLYHALE Gender:Male County Co. Kilkenny

    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Richard Ruth Mother: Bridget Walsh

From McLysaghts the name is from Rothe who were one of the original 10 tribes of Kilkenny from the 14th century, from the Norse meaning Red.

Rothe - This name, now rather rare in Ireland but usually spelt Ruth, is on record here as early as the thirteenth century: but no family of the name became firmly established until about 1390, when the close association of the Rothes with Kilkenny began. By the end of the sixteenth century they had become one of the leading families of that city and county. Robert Rothe (1550-1622), M.P. and Mayor and Recorder of Kilkenny was an antiquary and historian; his descendant Rev. Bernard Rothe, S.J. (1693-1768) had a distinguished career in France after leaving Kilkenny; Most is remembered as an author of note as well as for his support of Rinnuccini at the Confederation of Kilkenny; while another Kilkenny-born Rothe, General Michael Rothe (1661-1741), served with great distinction first in King Jame's Army in Ireland and later as Commander of Rothe's Regiment of Cavalry in the Irish Brigade. The spelling Rothe is not found in Grifiths Valuation in the mid-19th century. The name Ruth, although small in overall numbers, has a strong presence in Wexford, Kilkenny and Laois.

Above from the Roots web web site. Kilkenny is a lovely county and the small city is very nice with Butlers castle dominating. There was another query on the name from Tippeary, adjoining Kilkenny previously and I am in touch with both posters but we have not got any further on really.

Only myself and the two previous posters will see this so if you wish to start a new post under Kilkenny or Ballyhale it will be seen by the local volunteer if there is one and anyone else looking under Ballyale. Also when I Googled the Ten Tribes of Kilkenny I see there appears to be a Facebook page for them if you are interested.

To be sure of the correct birth we need the parents or mothers name or even a sibling would narrow it down, we are reliant on church records at that remove.

  • A belated thanks to Louise and others who contributed to this message string last year. I am descended from Moses Ruth through James Ruth, my 2x great grandfather (confirmed through Ancestry DNA). His son Robert was my great-great grandfather, and his son Simpson Carson my grandfather. I was especially pleased to read the article that Louise posted, as according to family lore, my grandfather left Ontario to help out on his aunts’ farm in Western Canada. (I thought it was in Saskatchewan but obviously it was Manitoba.) By the time he returned home to Ontario, the family had decamped across Lake Huron, ending up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Simpson rejoined the family and where my father was born.

I would be very interested in any information predating Moses Ruth in Cavan County.

  • Hi Dan:

Moses Ruth b 1781 and his wife Elizabeth Jones b 1791 are my 3X great grandparents through their son James b 1821 who married my 2X great grandmother Jane Braden/Braiden.  Their daughter Elizabeth Ruth Denoon was my great grandmother.  She married William Denoon b1852.  Their daughter Mary Alice Denoon b1885 was my grandmother.  She married Hugh Robert Dale b1875 and their son, Kenneth Mervin Dale was my father.

I did my DNA through Ancestry and have a tree on the site - the Louise Dale family.  My DNA came back 48% Irish and 52% England, Scotland and Wales !  My Gedmatch kit is NN8970566.  If you have done yours please send the number via email to me at LLzBellz@aol.com.  If you send me your email I will send an invite for you to view my tree.  You may be interested to know we have a relative in MB, Douglas Ruth.  I moved to Ennismore, Ontario two years ago as I wanted to return home to Peterborough but ended up here LOL  Now the interesting part.  Apparently I am a few miles away from the original Ruth family farm, also close to the church they went to AND have found a cousin living within two miles of me !  Once the covid virus has settled down I hope to be able t sit down with them and gather information.  Moses and Elizabeth are still a mystery as to their beginnings in Ireland.  I wasn't able to find the birth information in Ireland for James as well.  I also hope to make a visit to the Emily Cemetary where there is a grave for Moses and I suspect maybe Elizabeth.  So much to find out !

    Hope to talk soon.

    Kindest regards

    Louise
