I'm hoping to identify the location of my ancestors home.  The Scully /  Colohan family was a tenant of the Grand Canal Company in Lismany.  My earliest identified ancestor was Patrick Scully and his wife Bridget was still living on that land according to the 1911 census.

  • Dear Ed,

My name is Clare Horgan. I am a liaison for Ireland XO in Claregalway, Co. Galway. I looked up records of their children's birth and I can confirm back in the 1860's they were in Lismany/Lissmany/Lissymany/Lissmanny.

I found this online you may have seen it before but it is on the Grand Canal in Ballinasloe the area we are talking about. It mentions an Edward Colohan in it.

I don't know if this will ring any bells with you, but I would be only delighted to help you in any other way.

    Take Care,

    Clare

  • Hello Clare,

Thank you very much for your reply!  I have seen the piece on the Grand Canal and will examine the text on Edward.  I can't open the townland link but will try to get around it.  I will be visiting this summer and hope to see the land the Scullys and Colohans live on.  If there is any record of the locationof  lands rented to tenants, that's what I'm looking for.  Likewise I hope to find any graves in Clontuskert / Clonfert.

    Thanks again!

    Ed

  • Hi Ed,

I came across your post regarding Patrick Scully and Bridget Colahan.   They were my great great grandparents and are buried at St. Augustine's Church graveyard in Clontuskert County Galway.    They lived at Ballymana/Lismanny, Ballinasloe, County Galway.   Hope this is of help to you  Ed.

    Kind Regards,

    Liz
