Hello,

My second great grandmother was Margaret Lowry (born August 1844).  According to her US census reports, she arrived in 1864, but that is not correct.  Her oldest son was born in NJ in 1863.  She resided in Camden, NJ with her German-born husband, Frank Schlitz, until her death in 1906.  Ancestry DNA matches suggest that Margaret came from County Mayo, Ireland.  My Lowry DNA match is looking for a Sabina Lowry born in 1855 in County Mayo.  Sabina arrived in the US in 1865.

I do not know of any other relatives of Margaret other than the DNA match that I have found.  We are thinking that maybe the two Lowry ladies were cousins or possibly sisters.  They both resided in Camden, NJ and Sabina also resided across the river in Philadelphia, PA (five minutes away).

I found a passenger list for a Margaret Lowry in 1864 from Liverpool to NYC aboard the General McClellan. This Margaret appeared to be traveling alone.

Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Dawn Harvey

    Hello again and welcome back!

I don't think we are going to find any informaton and likely Margaret and Sabina were baptized in a parish that does not have records back to the 1840s and 1850s. Roots Ireland did not have any Sabina Lowry baptismal record in Mayo and the only one for Margaret from 1832-1848 was in 1847 which appears to be too late for your interests because of the son born in 1863.

You may want to review the past messages involving the surname Lowry. It appears the surname was also prominent in Co. Galway likely on the border with Mayo.

  • It turns out that Margaret Lowry was born sometime around 1837 in Ireland (she lied about her age on her US census records).  Her parents were Michael Lowry (born around 1815 in Ireland) and Mary Temple (born around 1817 in Ireland).  Any information that you coud find on Margaret and her parents would be greatly appreciated.  Regards, Dawn.

I checked all of Ireland on Roots and the closest record was in 1840 in Roscommon and likely not your ancestor.

  • Hello,

It seems that the record that you located two years ago was my second great grandmother.  I just need a little more help in order to piece this family's genealogy together.  DNA has lead me to another Lowry match who resided in Loughlyn, County Roscommon.  Her name was Bridget Lowry and she was born sometime around 1840 (I believe that she was my ancestor's sister).  Bridget married a man by the name of John Dillon and the couple's first child, Mary, was baptized on August 24, 1860.  Mary died in Tully on September 10, 1888 in Tully at the age of 27.  I was wondering if you could help me locate the marriage record for Bridget Lowry and John Dillon along with Bridget and John's death records.  Several of their children immigrated to NYC in the late 1880s, but it appears that Bridget and John did not emigrate from Ireland.  Bridget and John also had the following children: Catherine baptised on December 26, 1862, John baptised on February 27, 1867, Honor "Jane" baptised on October 10, 1869, Honora born sometime around 1872 and Brigid born on October 19, 1879.  Also, if you could locate the birth/death information on Margaret and Bridget's father, Michael Lowry, that would be much appreciated.  Best Regards, Dawn.

  • Hi Dawn!

I was not able to find a baptismal record for Bridget and also her marriage record. I did find two older brothers to Margaret and their records are below. I think the problem is gaps in the Loughlynn records https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0557  As you can see, 1840 baptismal records do not appear to be available. Also, marriage records have a gap between February 1858 and early 1865. Likely Bridget was married in 1859.

I had no success finding death records for Bridget and John on www.irishgenealogy.ie  If they did not go to America, is it possible they emigrated to England with one of the children?

Michael Lowry would have been born before records were available in Loughlynn.

Hi Roger!  I did manage to locate some additional information.  John Dillon died in Tully, Roscommon on November 2, 1899.  His widow, Bridget Lowry Dillon, was living with her daughter, Nora "Annie" Dillon Mulrennan, for the 1901 and 1911 Ireland Census reports (I have attached the image of the 1911 census). Another researcher wrote the following:

"The Griffiths Valuation shows Bridget as the occupier of 13 acres with a house and office in 1905 and 191 1 , ln 1917 the occupier was T[omas Mulrennan and presumably Bridget had died. The 1901 census states that Thomas, Annie and Bridget were all born in Roscommon and Bridget spoke English and lrish.' Annie could read and write while Thomas could not read. He was a farmer. Bridget could read. The 1911 census lists Bridget Dillon still living with the Mulrennan family which now includes children Patrick, Mary, Kate, Thomas and Jane."

I tried to look for a death record for Bridget on irishgenealogy.ie.  I didn't see any that listed "Tully, Roscommon".  I'm not familiar with the surrounding areas, so maybe it was there and I didn't recognize it.  I would really like to locate Bridget's death record.  Would you be able to search for it or recommend any resources?  I greatly appreciate your help. Have a wonderful weekend! Best Regards, Dawn.

  • Hi Dawn!

I did not find the record in the Castlerea registration district. Likely here death was not recorded.
