My grandfather was Philip Handrehan(his Spelling) born in Ireland in 1845 or 46. His parents were Richard and Anastasia(Fogarty). I found them on ships list Brody, July 13, 1850 New York. It was spelled Hanrahan and Richard was b. 1820. Found them in Buffalo, N.Y. 1850 census as Handlin, Richard b. 1812. Parents died before 1855 and three children, Edmund, Philip and John(born N.Y.) were listed in a catholic orphanage under name of Handlin. They were there a year then sent to live with relatives in Lockport, N, Y. but Philip didn't remember their names. He and Edmund ran away and were separeted and Philip was taken in by people in Aberdeen, Ohio. He never saw his brother again. He served in the Civil War and his papers say he was born in Co. Tipperary but the family say he always said he was from Co. Clare. We had a researcher look for the family in 1970s'  but he never found anything.

  • Hi Florence,

I've had a look for the Handrahans but haven't had too much success.

rootsireland.ie doesn't include Clare records but does have Tipperary's.

There were no results from searches for Handrahan or Handlin but lots for Hanrahan.

There were 17 matches for Hanrahans born 1820 + - 1 year in Tipperary and 39 matches for those born 1845 + - 1 year but none with parents Richard & Annastasia!

There were 4 records of Anastasia Fogarty in Tipperary but the birth years were 2 X1884 1891 & 1900.

I checked the Clare and Tipperary records on the Tithe Applotments & Griffiths Valuations (both free to search) and found that the Phillips and Richards were much more prevalent in Tipperary for Hanrahans. (No Handrahans). So if the first names were passed down as was common practice it looks loke Tipperary might be the better bet; but the missing birth and marriage records suggest Clare.

I checked ancestry but noone has done your tree so no luck there.

I hope you get some other responses with better results.

  • Thanks for checking  for me. The census record in Buffalo has the mother's name as Annette and the ship record has a male Antr age 26, Philip is 4 and Edmund 6. There is also a John 25 listed on the same ship. Maybe a brother.?  Rich was listed as a farmer, in the census record he is listed as a mason. The ship was in July and the census in August and Philip is shown as 5 and Edmund 7. I know they lived in Buffalo and the only record I have found for ship records is the one that has the same names but not the same ages. It has always been a mystery. Philip married a girl whose grandfather Rea, was born in Ireland but he wrote his life story so that really helped. Philip studied after the war and became a lawyer and I guess he tried to find his brother Edmund but never did.

  • Hi Florence,

I searched again for Handrahan with less search criteria and got Richard Handrahan born 1812 in Tipperary - parish Carrick-on-Sur RC.

I also got Edmund born 1843 Tipperary parish Ardfinnan RC.

Will follow up later today - off to golf now.

  • Hi again Florence,

I checked the Edmund 1843 record for father's name but it wasn't Richard.

I tried searching deaths for Richard Handrahan Tipperary 1870 + - 20 years and got 2 matches - 1879 aged 65 & 1871 aged 101!! Obviously the first one is pretty close to being born in 1812. The parish was Littleton Civil.

There are a couple of Ann Fogartys born in Tipperary in 1813 (praps the same one twice) and another 5 born 1810 + - 10 years. In spite of lots of searches I couldn't get Richard's & Ann/Annette/Annastasia's marriage.

You might want to post a message on the Carrick-on-Suir parish page on this site to see if they can help with Richard .
