I am searching information re my Great, G G Grandparents who came from Tiperary.

Their names were Patrick and Johanna Cross and had 4 Children of whom migrated to Sydney Australia in 1957

Their names were  Michael Cross, Edward Cross, Catherine and Mary Cross.

Patrick and Johanna died before the children left to come to Sydney.

I really need some guidance as to where I can look to get definite information regards Patrick and Johanna

Thanks Kindly to each and all who may be able to throw some light on the matter

  • Patricia,

I am looking for clarification. Did the children go to Sydney in 1957 or 1857? On Ancestry, I found the same names ranging birth from 1833 to 1844 going to Sydney in 1857. Their parents are identified as Patrick Cross and Johanna Dwyer. Catherine was born in Sologhead, Tipperary in 1845.

  • Patricia/Mary:

Sologhead and Oola RC parish covers areas in Co. Limerick and Co. Tipperary. Their baptismal records have a gap between November 1828 and February 1837. On the subscription site Roots Ireland I found three baptismal records Edmond July 1 1838 Johanna March 21 1842 Catherine July 12 1845.

I believe they lived in Kylegarve townland in Doon civil parish in Co. Limerick.

  • Roger and Patricia,

Roger, thank you for the clarification. Clearly, the three birth records on RootsIreland identify Limerick as the county. Edmond's identifies Kylegarve, Limerick.

The 131 trees on Ancestry all show this family from Tipperary. I am wondering if they are confusing the two townlands. They include a Griffith Valuation for Kyle in their trees. There are 6 Crosses with land in Kyle listed on this record.

    Occupier Patrick Cross
    Lessor John Maher Esquire
    County Tipperary
    Barony Clanwilliam
    Parish Solloghodbeg
    Townland Kyle

    Kylegarve Townland, Co. Limerick (townlands.ie)

    Kyle Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)

I think they are also confusing where Catherine was born with Kyle, Solloghodbeg, Tipperary.

    Record from Ancestry

    Name Catherina Cross
    Baptism Age 0
    Event Type Baptism
    Birth Date 1845
    Baptism Date 12 Jul 1845
Baptism Place Sologhead, Limerick and Tipperary, Ireland
Residence Place Shyla NOTE_Probably should be Kyle short for Kylegarve.
Parish Variants Oola, Oola and Solohead, Sologhead and Oola, Solohead
    Diocese Cashel and Emly
    Father Patritis Cross
    Mother Johanna Duyer

Michael Cross, Edward Cross, Catherine and Mary Cross, who all went to Australia in 1857, all noted on the ship's manifest they were from Tipperary.  Perhaps the family moved to Solloghodbeg, Tipperary before the Griffith Valuation or the children moved in with family living in Tipperary when their parents died.

Roger, am I looking at this correctly?

    Thank you- Mary

  • Mary:

I think you are correct since the Griffiths' has a Patrick Cross in Kyle townland Solloghodbeg civil parish and the family indicated they were from Tipperary.
