I WILL ARRIVE IN COUNTY LIMERICK FRIDAY OCT 11 TO RESEARCH MY ROOTS IN KILLEEDY RC PARISH.   MY GREAT-GRANDMOTHER, MARY HANLEY, WAS BORN IN ASHFORD IN 1865, THE DAUGHTER OF MICHAEL HANLEY.   THE HANLEY HOME IS IN ASHFORD, I HAVE NO TROUBLE FINDING IT, I HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE.   I AM INTERESTED IN FINDING THE GRAVESITE OF HER FATHER MICHAEL HANLEY (I DO NOT HAVE HIS WIFE'S NAME), WHICH I THINK IS IN KILLEEDY.   AND I AM INTERESTED IN TRACING A GENERATION OR 2 BEFORE MICHAEL HANLEY.   HIS DAUGHTER MARY WAS BORN IN 1865, MOVED TO CHICAGO 1883, AND PASSED AWAY THERE IN 1938.   I DO NOT HAVE THE BIRTH AND DEATH DATES OF HER FATHER, MICHAEL.   IF HE HAD A NORMAL LIFE EXPECTANCY, HE WOULD HAVE PASSED AWAY 1910-1920.

THANK YOU                       JIM HYNAN     NORTHBROOK IL    (I WILL BE GLAD TO MAKE A DONATION PRIOR TO MY DEPARTURE TO YOUR ORGANIZATION)

  • Hi Jim,

There is a record of Mary Hanley's baptism on rootsireland.ie. (just google then register to search)

I used your information to search:

    baptisms/births Hanley Mary father Michael 1865 + - 1 in Limerick only.

There are actually 2 results: 1 Hanly & 1 Hanley both 1864 (1865 had no results)

I clicked on the magnifying glass at the end of the entries and checked the parish - both are Kilkeedy R C so I suspect it's the same record twice.

rootsireland.ie is a pay site so it will cost to purchase the record which will have the mother's name on it. The site has a deal on at the moment so it's less expensive than usual.

If you get the mother's name you can then look for the marriage record which might have their gaes so you can work out a birth year.

In trying to establish whether Michael was still alive or where he was I floundered around a bit as follows:

There are 3 Michael Hanleys in Griffiths Valuation (free to search) which was done in Limerick 1850-52. 2 are in Kilmurry and 1 in Oola parish.

In the Irish Census 1901 & 1911 there are 24 & 26 Michael Hanleys but I couldn't see any reference to Ashford or Kilkeedy.

The Tithe Applotments 1823-37 also has 35 Hanleys in Limerick.

I searched for Michael's birth. I assumed he was aged 20 to 40 when Mary was born so  I searched 1830 + - 15 in Limerick and got 76 matches!

Similarly, I tried deaths for him 1900 + - 20 years in Limerick and got 26 matches.

Interestingly, on ancestry Frank Connell's tree has a Michael Hanley born 1840 in Limerick & died 1909 Chicago; married Mary Curtin and had 9 children including Mary born 1869 Chicago. Parents Michael Hanley & Mary Powell. Michael Hanley senior emigrated to NY 4 Dec 1848 on the Samuel Hicks; died 'about 1858 Chicago'

    Have a great trip!
