We are looking for our 2Ggrandparents.  Robert Casey B 1828 and Maria B 1836, who came to Australia.

Roberts Baptism information as follows:-

Robert married Mary Moran in Conahy Kilkenny on June 6th 1854, at that time Robert lived in Shagana; they emigrated to Victoria Australia in December, 1854. In Australia they lived around the Ballarat/Grampians area.  The witnesses for their wedding were Anne Casey and John Maher.

Robert, Baptised 13/8/1828 Grove. Parish St Johns, Kilkenny, Ireland
Father John, Mother Elizabeth Dawton Sponsors Edmund & Catherine Healy Note: mother given as Betty Denominatiom Roman Catholic. They had 10 children, and William the 6th child became our grandfather.

We know that Robert had a sister Maria who married John Dickinson and they lived in the St Arnaud area, they also had 10 children.

We also believe other siblings to Robert may have been Anne, Catherine and Bridget.

We are not sure if any of Robert's children went to Ireland as we cannot locate 3 of them.

Thank you Bel Casey

  • Dear Bel

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

You don't give Robert's surname, was he a Casey?

    Best wishes

  • Dear Bel

I had a look on rootsireland and there are only two baptism records for children born to John Casey and Elizabeth Dawton: Robert, your grandfather and his sister Anne, baptised in 1840. As this is a subscription site, I am limited in what I can see. I did another search without the Dawton surname in case other baptisms had been captured under another name and there are 18 baptisms for children born to a father John Casey and mother first name Elizabeth. As familysearch.org is a free site it might be useful for you do conduct the same search there and see what mother surnames appear for those 18 baptisms. It may be the case though, that there are only 2 baptism records, those of Robert and Anne.

There are also a couple of John Casey entries on the Tithe Applotment Books:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=Casey+&firstname=John&county=Kilkenny&parish=&townland=&search=Search

You should also check Griffith?s Valuation:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=33&Submit.y=13&Submit=Submit&familyname=Casey&firstname=John&baronyname=&countyname=KILKENNY&unionname=&parishname=

In terms of the other children of John and Elizabeth, I had a look on rootsireland.ie but there are no entries for Casey marriages where the father was listed as John and the other Elizabeth. I wonder did all of the children emigrate.

Hope this provides some help to you!

    Best wishes

  • Dear Clare

How time flies, thank you for all the research you have done but I must apologise. I must have been having a grey moment when I put in there message in September. For Robert's wife Elizabeth, I had the heading as Dalton yet in the body of the message I had Dawson, which is what we first thought was right. We discovered it was Dalton. Thanks to the Baptism page on your FB page we confirmed Bridget, and found her as a witness also. So my apologies again. However if there are any Casey or Daltons out there who may feel they are related, we would appreciate a message. Bridget Casey did come out to Australia but we have not yet tracked her, perhaps she went back to Ireland.
Thank you for all you do.
