My 3x g-grandparents were both born in County Cork  Ireland. On their memorial stone it is engraved that Dennis Sheehan was born 1809 in Parish Greenfield and that his wife Julia Byrne (Sheehan) was born 1816 in Parish Kilnaclua.  I'm trying to find out where these Parishes are in county Cork. Thankyou :)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The closest parish to Greenfield in Co. Cork would be Grenagh. There is also an RC parish called Grenagh. Records for that  parish start in 1840.

There would be many possibilities for Kilnaclua but none real close in spelling. Kilmaloda is a possibility but the RC parish for the area also has records starting in the 1840s.

I searched for a marriage record for the couple on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and did not find a record.

You can add their emigration story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someonew will see a connection  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Dear Maxwell:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  I have passed this query to several of our Cork volunteers who may be able to decipher which parish your greatx3 grandparents came from.  They will reply to you on this thread.

The very best of luck with your research.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Dear Jane,  I thought I would add a little more information.. Dennis Sheehan b. c. 1809 in Parish Greenfield's mother was Mary Sheehan.. There was an  article in the local paper in Pennsylvania of her death. It stated she died on her 107th birthday on 25 March 1872! That would have made her born in Ireland in 1765. I believe she was born  c. 1770.  Still  a remarkably long life.  She had another son   James born c. 1813 also in Parish Greenfield.  Her  son's could have immigrated to the U.S. as early as 1836. I don't know if Mary came with them or immigrated later. Her husband was quite possibly named James Sheehan and I have no record of him in the U.S.   I do not know if Dennis and his wife Julia Byrne were married in Ireland or the U.S.   They all belonged to St. Anthony's R.C. Church in Stowell Pennsylvania.  There was an Irish settlement there. Sending my sincere  thanks to you Jane and to  irelandxo.com.
