My ancestor James Buchanan was said to have been born around 1828/9 in Strathmanis Is. Ireland.

He emigrated to Australia aboard The Genghis Khan with his wife Catherine Cain and 3 year old son William James, from Londonderry, in 1853.

I cannot find any reference to Strathmanis on the net. If anyone has heard of this place I would appreciate your help.

  • Strath is more Scottish than Irish (it really means a fertile valley). There?s no Strathmanis in Ireland. There?s a Strathall in Co Derry and Straths in Co Donegal. Also Slaghtmanus in Co Derry (which sounds very similar to Strathmanis) . None is an island though. All are townlands.
