Suggestion, The 1930 US Census asks the question birthplace of parents.  In 1930 recent Irish immgrants and the children of earlier famine era immigrants responded either "Ireland Free State" or "Ireland UK".  it would be handy if there was an option to join not only an "Ireland" message board, but also add an option to specify "Freestate" or "Ireland UK" to narrow a search, when the informatin is known.  Good Luck Jim Houlihan

  • This seems more confusing than i thought it would be.  From the perspective of Diaspora, especially Famine Era and earlier, records of  ancestors and events before the existence of the Freestate will record Ireland as one place (all 32 counties).  The first reference to a divided Ireland (in The US Census) appear in 1930.  My last surviving immigrant ancestor died in 1920 at the age of 103 years, most of these immigrants died long before.  When searching this largest group of the Diaspora modern political divisions can not help in any search until at the minmum the county of origin is determined.  JH
