HI, I am currently researching Thomas Hart born abt 1836 in Ireland. I can find other family history on Ancestry that says he was born in Westport, Mayo. I can not find proof of that and am wondering if any of the kind folk here maybe able to find the birth of him, parents apparently Edward Hart and Mary Dempsey or marriage for them.

When I look at the Catholic Parish records  (National Library of IrelandI)   I read it as not being available before the 1840's. They could be Protestant as well. I have contacted another researcher  who have these folk in their tree but have not yet heard back.

Thomas Hart died 10 July 1896 in NSW, Australia

Any help or suggestions kindly welcomed. Gay O'Neill

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any Hart baptismal records where the parents were Edward Hart and Mary Dempsey. Also did not find a marriage record for Edward and Mary. Aghagower RC records start in 1828 but Oughaval (Westport) baptismal records start in 1845.So if the Harts were RC and from Westport then records would not be available.

If they were Church of Ireland and from Oughaval (Westport) parish then records are available at the Representative Church Library in Dublin.  If you can confirm that they were C of I then let me know and I can provide more info but a visit to Dublin would be necessary or pay a researcher to check for you.

  • Since you've also been looking in other databases, you may already be aware of this, but there are records for Thomas Hart, as well as his parents and siblings, in the FamilySearch database, where it says that he was born 16 March1834 in Westport.

FamilySearch is operated by the LDS church, and is free to use.  The site is located here:  https://www.familysearch.org

You have to create an account to use it, but they don’t ask for much personal info, and no missionaries will contact you  or anything like that.  The database does not have separate family trees, and is essentially one huge tree of linked records, in which there is a single record for each person, with a unique identification number.  You can search by name, but also by that number, and the number for Thomas Hart is LRF6-9RR.  Once you are at his record, you will see how easily you can move up and down the tree by clicking on the names of other people who are shown.
