  • Angusbag,

Do you know what denomination the family was, or where in Down they may have lived?

  • Hi Angusbag, If your Mary Ann Hughes married John William Johnston, then perhaps I may be able to help.  Her parents Margaret Livingstone and Thomas Hughes were my 3xgreat grandparents.  I believe Thomas was the son of John Hughes AKA 'Gunner', who served with the Royal Corps of Artillery.  The family was Protestant.  I have no definite proof of their location in County Down, but according to his 1821 application for land in Lanark County Ontario, he was 'very old' with a "large family".  https://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-119.02-e.php?PHPSESSID=npfo6qij0n1rpue06msk2mqnj1&sqn=591&q2=29&q3=2471&tt=1075.  Siblings of Thomas included John  and Joseph and the 3 siblings appear to have arrived together from Ireland about 1827

  • hi Jan, thanks for reply. Tbh I had to think abt who Thomas was. !! So, he's a dna match. Through Mary Ann born 1813. His daughter. She married Thomas Milliken.

I've been researching the Hughes for years, so I'll have a good look at this. Any idea who the mother of Thomas was??

I've loads notes on the Hughes. If you want .

Not sure whether I'm allowed to give out email on this site.

  • Hello Elaine, I would love to share information on the Hughes and inter-related families.  I'm pretty sure I have done some research with another person from your line.

Anyone can see Thomas' profile on WikiTree https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hughes-13641

    I'm also on Ancestry https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/person/tree/5366239/person/806505278/facts

Either of those programs allow you to contact me and then for sure you can choose to share your email

  • From Freeholders Records, the same name person Thomas Hughes was located at Ballynagarrick, County Down, but of course I have no proof that this was the same person.

  • Hi Again Elaine.  Please don't be discouraged, I've never been able to confirm the father of Mary Ann [Hughes] Milliken. I do know Mary Ann married Thomas Milliken, and I'm confident that she was a granddaughter of John 'Gunner' Hughes, who had a very large family.  So for sure we do share Hughes genes.  But I have no missing daughter for Thomas Hughes who was one of the known sons of John 'Gunner' Hughes. I only know of two other sons of John 'Gunner' Hughes, John b1782 and Joseph b1794.  That's a big gap where there could have easily been other sons born to John 'Gunner' Hughes and his unnamed wife.

Thomas Hughes and Margaret [Livingstone] had a daughter Mary bn 1813 who married 31 July 1838 to John William Johnston.  The Johnston's farmed north of Maberly, E1/2 Lot 13 Conc 11 South Sherbrooke Twp, next to her parents Thomas and Margaret.

Just to further complicate things, in 1851 agricultural census, Thomas and Mary Ann Milliken were living on 300 acres Lots 18 and 19 Conc 10 South Sherbrooke twp, across the road from George 'Liveston', (Livingstone).  George was married to Margaret Hughes, another daughter of Thomas Hughes and Margaret [Livingstone].

AND Mary Ann and Thomas Milliken had a son Robert Milliken b 1851 who married Margaret Jane [Hughes], the daughter of Robert Hughes and Letitia [Chambers].  Robert Hughes was one of the sons of Thomas Hughes and Margaret [Livingstone].

  • Hey Elaine

Today I was looking at Land Petitions on C-2739 for someone else, and the very next image 491 was John Milliken grant for land on 9 Nov 1822 for Lot 20 Conc 10 South Sherbrooke  and also one for Emmanual Milliken jr 20 Feb 1821 for Lot 21 Conc 10.  Those dates would be when they completed the requirements to clear land and erect a home.
